Contacting your Student’s Counselor • Your counselor is available for • Academic Planning and Course Selection Guidance • College and Career Planning/Preparation • Social/Emotional Support and Intervention • How students contact their counselor • Visit before school, during lunch, or after school Monday-Friday. This method is best if there is a concern or question that can be addressed quickly. • Fill out a “call slip" (available in the Counseling Office at the secretary’s desk). This method is best if there is a concern or question that may take more time to address. Students can also indicate the period during which he or she would like to be called. • For an urgent matter which requires immediate attention and cannot be addressed through the other methods, students may come in to see a counselor anytime. Please first check in with your teacher and the Counseling Secretary.

Staying Informed • Listen to Daily Bulletin announcements and watch CCA-TV • Read the Counseling, College & Career Center Newsletter • Visit the Counseling Website and the 9th Grade page to use the 9th grade Counseling Calendar • Get to know your teachers • See your counselor and ask questions • Attend the CCA Club Fair. • Register and use Naviance • Check the CCA website

Tips for 9th Grade Students • Develop your study skills • Practice good time management • Identify and utilize efficient study methods that work for you • Seek help when needed (attend teacher tutoring hours, form study groups, consult with your counselor) • Monitor your grades • Communicate with your teachers • Regularly check your grades using Aeries • Maintain a healthy lifestyle • Successful students get adequate sleep, eat nutritious foods, and have a balance between their home, school and social lives • Get involved in school activities (clubs, Athletics, Envision, ASB, PALs etc.) • Maintain good grades • Your grades should be an accurate reflection of your abilities. • Reasonably challenge yourself, but be careful not to take on more than you can handle

SDUHSDGraduation Requirements

Grades and Transcripts • On the 4 x 4 schedule, students will receive two permanent grades each term, which will be posted to the CCA transcript. These are the equivalent of semester grades on a traditional schedule. Each term is equal to one year. • Plus and minus signs are not shown official transcripts. • You can review your student’s transcript and graduation status throughout high school by using the Aeries portal. • If you have a question or concern about grades, or the content or procedures in a class, please contact the teacher directly. You can use Aeries to monitor your student’s academic progress and attendance.

CSU/uc Subject Requirements • Minimum eligibility requirements: • History/Social Science – 2 YEARS/TERMS REQUIRED • English – 4 YEARS/TERMS REQUIRED • C. Mathematics – 3 YEARS/TERMS REQUIRED, 4 TERMS RECOMMENDED • *Must complete through Algebra II or Integrated Math III • D. Laboratory Science – 2 YEARS/TERMS REQUIRED, 3 TERMS RECOMMENDED • E. Language Other than English – 2 YEARS/TERMS REQUIRED, 3 TERMS RECOMMENDED • *2 terms must be the same language; taking level 2 or higher equals two years or more • Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) – 1 YEAR/TERM REQUIRED • *Must be UC-approved • College-Preparatory Electives – 1 YEAR/TERM REQUIRED • *All courses must be completed with ‘C’ grade or higher • *CSU/UC approved course list for CCA 10

Counseling, College & Career Center • Ms. Burton, the College & Career Center Coordinator, is on campus Mon.-Thurs. 11:05 am - 3:15 pm, and Fridays 11:05 am - 2:00 pm • Ms. Burton is available to answer questions and assist with Naviance, a program with college and career information, scholarship searches and more • Computers with Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are accessible for student use • PSAT/ACT/SAT/AP guides, prep books, catalogs, and various other college materials are available for students and parents

Exploring and Planning • Students should start using Naviance to • Track extra-curricular activities and begin to create a résumé • Complete “Do What You Are” tohelp identify careers & majors that match their interests • Research colleges & majors: Admissions statistics are available for prior graduating classes. • If you find a college/university you are interested in, add it to your “Colleges I’m Thinking • About” list now. A Naviance tutorial is available on the Counseling website Student account– if you haven’t registered, use student ID number as the registration code Parent account- parents who haven’t registered should use the student ID number with a letter p (ex.123456p) as the registration code

Creating a “4-Year Plan” Counselors suggest that students do not start a four-year plan until the spring term so that they can make more informed choices. When you start creating a plan, remember • Include all courses required to graduate and for college eligibility. • Be challenged but not overwhelmed. • There is no universal plan. It should be unique to you and your goals. You can research various colleges and careers using Naviance and the college websites to find out exactly what is required and recommended for admission. • The plan should be considered tentative and can be revised at any time.

PALs PALs(Purposeful Action Leaders/Listeners) act as role models to their fellow students. Their sole mission is to get you connected on campus and help you find your niche here at CCA. These students are passionate about CCA and all the awesomeness this campus has to offer. They are students who unselfishly donate their time, energy, and skills to helping other students and staff. The premise of PALs is that everyone has the need to feel connected and adolescence is a very difficult and challenging time of life. Often students find it easier to connect and talk to another student than an adult. The mission of the CCA PALsis to promote student well-being and facilitate student connectedness through exposing students to campus activities and organizations, and inspire unconditional acceptance to create an open, safe, and positive high school experience. PALs promote acceptance by attending events on campus at CCA, promoting a positive environment in the social media realm, and offering student counseling as a resource on campus. PALs Services • PALs are available in the Counseling Office Group Room at lunch on M,T, W, and F • Lunch hang out with picnic blankets on Thursdays on the grassy area heading down to the NEST. • PALs are in the Counseling Office at STUDY HALL Monday-Thursday after school from 3:15-5:00 pm to connect with students and offer academic assistance. • A group of PALs go to events and meet up at a pre-determined spot before the show/game and go in together.
