  2. Symbol • A symbol is an object that represents something else Evil or danger

  3. Mood vs. Tone Mood -the emotional quality or atmosphere of a story that is felt by the reader MOOD = ME Tone- the author’s feelings and attitude toward his or her subject, ideas, theme, or characters of the story TONE = TELLER

  4. Point of View • First person- the story is told by one of the characters, referred to as “I” • Omniscient 3rd person- the narrator reveals the thoughts and feelings of all of characters • Limited 3rd person- the narrator reveals thoughts and feelings of one character

  5. Theme the message of a story, poem, novel, or play; usually expressed as a general statement

  6. Foreshadow The author gives hints of what is to come in a story. Usually occurs during the rising action

  7. Characterization Terms Characterization: the method a writer uses to develop the personality of a character

  8. Characterization Terms Flat character: a character that has one main personality trait

  9. Characterization Terms Round character: a character with multiple personality traits

  10. Characterization Terms Static character: a character who stays the same throughout the story Beginning of the story End of the story

  11. Characterization Terms Dynamic character: a character who changes/matures throughout the story

  12. Direct Characterization: • The writer makes direct statements about a character’s personality. Characterization Examples I am a lazy, good for nothing bum. But please don’t fire me!

  13. You were asleep at your desk, you are a week behind on your reports, and you appear to be wearing the same clothes as yesterday. Indirect characterization: The writer reveals the character’s personality through the character’s words, actions, and what other characters think and say about the character.
