  5. What you Needto Get Started Shoes with Leather Or Wooden Soles

  6. For Shoes with Leather Soles: Coins or “Taps” made for Tap Shoes

  7. Leather Soled Shoes Continued: Screws and Screw Driver Nails and Hammer

  8. What to know before you start: • Taps that come with shoes have holes drilled into them so that the taps can be screwed onto the soles of the shoes. • As for coins, a hole will need to be formed, and then the coins can be screwed in to the soles of the shoes. • Both can be hammered in, but screws will allow for adjustments to the tones of your taps and are less likely to fall out. • Use safety goggles to avoid eye injuries when going about the proceeding tasks with the afore mentioned tools. • Do not drive nails or screws through the soles of the shoes. It will damage the shoe, as well as hurt when you dance.

  9. To Prepare the Leather Soled Shoe: First On the sole of each shoe, at the toe and heel areas, mark where each tap and coin will be placed. Second Within those areas, mark where each screw will secure each tap or coin. Third Take the nail and hammer and make a very small hole into the sole where the marks are for the screws to go.

  10. To Prepare Coins:FirstLay the coin Flat onto a hard surface.SecondPut the sharp point of the nail to the coin.ThirdStrike the “head” of the nail with the hammer, forcing the point of the nail through the coin. This action may have to be repeated to ensure that the nail goes through to the other side of the coin.

  11. To Place Taps or Coins on ShoesFirstHold the coin or tap in place with the finger, side and or palm of one hand.SecondWith same hand, place and hold a screw in the hole of the tap or coin.ThirdWith the other hand, screw each screw into place on to the sole of each shoe.Repeat steps until all screws and taps or coins are in place.

  12. Now walk around and tryout the shoes. How do they feel? How do they sound? Play with the tension of the screws to adjust the sound. Be careful not to strip them or the grooves made in the leather.
