  1. Distance Learning at AMES • Distance Learning is delivered across all 9 sites in AMES. • There are approximately 50 teachers who teach in the program. • Each teachers is allocated a number of students, depending on the number of teaching hours. • DL is based on a one-to-one relationship between teacher and student. • Currently teacher/student contact can be : face-to-face by telephone by computer- email/Skype

  2. What is Distance Learning? • Distance Learning is a course based on a book + CD + DVD which can be studied at home and supported by a teacher. • Students complete units of work from IOTY (It’s Over To You/ At Work in Australia). • Each unit is sent to the teacher (either by post, face-to- face or online), who corrects it and sends it back to the student. • The student then contacts the teacher to discuss the unit and do speaking practice and some speaking assessment. • All books are based on life in Australia. • Individualised programs can be customised for students with specific needs. eg. Email etiquette at work, job interview preparation, report writing etc.

  3. Why Distance Learning? If students: • cannot come to class • are too busy with family to attend class • are pregnant and would prefer to stay at home • do not have enough hours left to study in a class or have less than 100 hours remaining • are studying part-time and want to do some extra study • are working, have AMEP hours and would like to improve their speaking, reading or writing.

  4. Assessment • Modules and learning outcomes are based on the CSWE • Students achieve learning outcomes as per CSWE • Assessment tasks are embedded in homework tasks.

  5. How much does it cost? • For students with AMEP hours, 5 hours are used each week Books/CDs/DVDs are free • For private students, the course costs: approx $75 per week (teacher tuition) approx $35 for each book /CD • Eligibility depends on student’s visa number  check with office
