  3. Story Story set from lilac books • really interesting part of chemistry, info, background etc • from here we will develop the key ideas • Provides the main thread we shall follow • You have short assignments to do from this book

  4. Ideas • Ideas from pink book • this is where you find the chemistry, • As mentioned in the story. • It explains and underpins the subject. • Ideas are introduced, and then revisited. • You do problems from each section of this book

  5. Activities • photocopied by unit linked to the story, • practicals, • data analysis, • ICT and role play etc. • issued with for the duration of the unit • we will mark most activities. • keep a good set of summaries from the final unit activities.

  6. AS assessment • Module 1 weighted at 15% (Units EL DF) • 1.25 hrs • Module 2 weighted at 20%( Units ME, WM PR, At) 1.75 hrs • Module 3 weighted at 15% • 3a an“Open Book” essay worth 7.5% over 2 week slot • 3b Investigative skills 7.5% • Plan, Obtain evidence, Analyse, Evaluate • Aim to do both exams summer 2003

  7. Internal assessments • End of unit tests • Mock year 12 AS exam • Reports will reflect on progress on problems

Resources. • ICT Web sites, CD’s databases, chemistry dropbox • Library books, in the school library and in the chemistry lab there are many up to date books and magazines “Chemistry review" "School Science review” and "Education in Chemistry" and much careers information . • Teachers ! Any of the chemists, will help you at any convenient time, whether your stuck, or just want to talk chemistry which we all enjoy !! We just love you taking that initiative!

  9. Safety • We strongly recommend you wear a lab coat, it will protect clothes and you can at least look like a proper scientist, they can be purchased town or borrow the ones we have in school. • Also wear safety glasses for all experiments. Remember you are now able to use more chemicals and to do more adventurous chemistry; by nature some of this work is more hazardous. • Be very careful to read safety information and carry out the activities as instructed. • There will be a rota for clearing / tidying up and checking the labs. You will take responsibility for a 2 week block.

  10. Trips • We will organise various trips, and visits, in particular we hope to go to Ecton Deep mine in Derbyshire. • Nottingham University lecture on their Open day, the Nottingham Trent explosives lecture, and any other goodies that come our way !

Destinations • Many students do decide to continue either in Chemistry or else to use their Chemistry in some way. • Chemistry does offer many rewarding opportunities in industry, research and has very good employment prospects and great academic study potential. • Chemistry is also important as a service to medicine veterinary medics dentists pharmacists etc. • We are only too happy to encourage you pursue or discover your dream and therefore help you in whatever way we can to sort out career opportunities.

  13. Commitment • In order to succeed, you must view lesson time as minimal, • read up before lessons etc. Also read around the subject. • Hours...........at least 5-6 hours extra to what you do in school. • If you find you do not understand or grasp material, you must put in extra work and hours, and ask for help. Please talk to us if you are having any problems.
