  2. Objectives for this session Find out what works in developing excellent union leaders through mentoring. Review a model for how to mentor and try some new techniques. Know what you have to offer as a mentor. Commit to one conversation with one specific person.

  3. Who mentored you? What are you doing now that you never dreamed you’d be doing 10-20 years ago? What steps did it take to get you there? Who helped you along the way? What was their relationship to you? Who asked who? Formal or informal? Once, several times, lots? Words of wisdom you still remember?

  4. Some Definitions Mentor: a trusted counselor or guide; advisor Coach: a private tutor; one who instructs or trains (fundamentals and strategy) Teacher: one whose occupation is to instruct by precept, example or experience

  5. Pair up and ask each other… Speaker: Think of one person who mentored you. Tell what specifically they did that helped develop you as a union leader. Listener: Focus on being fully present and listening deeply.

Mentoring Techniques Listen and reflect Role plays Open ended questions (“what do you think?” “what do you see as the options?”) Stories, and the lessons learned from them (including failures) Give assignments and then debrief together Observe and give feedback Come back to a few key lessons/themes

  10. Some additional guidelines Invite the person to come up with their own answers and solutions, and steer them away from disaster if necessary. Share your knowledge about the big picture (context, history, organizational culture). Think about setting: is this a good time and place for the person to learn? Be clear about power relations (there probably are some) and your own agenda (you probably have one).

  12. Find a new partner Speaker: What can you teach new activists? What is the best you have to offer to others learning to be union leaders? What are you really good at? Listener: Practice active listening and authentic speech.

  13. With your partner…. Speaker: Practice the conversation in which you will offer to mentor a specific person. Try out the actual words you will use to make this offer. Listener: Listen and offer feedback. What did you hear? How did it feel?
