  3. Characteristics of the Hero • Has larger than life qualities • possibly supernatural • A natural leader of men • Is appealing/attractive • encounters temptations • Has ‘good’ on his or her side, sometimes helped by divine beings (gods)

  4. Characteristics continued… • Smarter than everyone else, usually a great problem solver • Is generous to supporters but ruthless enemies • Often stands alone in battle • A skilled fighter

  5. The Hero’s Journey • Faces obstacles and temptations • Descends into darkness (usually underworld) • Goes on long journeys, always on the move, travels to find adventure

  6. The Journey continued • Defeats monsters, enemies, and defies authority (gods) • After achieves goal, returns home where their journey and successes are celebrated

  7. Identify other heroes that exist in our culture. Who are they? WHY are they considered a hero?
