  1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

  2. Introduction.. In this presentation I will be exploring the different production companies my group thought about and created before filming the sequence. I will also be talking about the distribution companies we explored before coming to a final decision. This was an integral part of our planning process and we took a lot of time out to discuss the pros and cons of each production/distribution company to ensure the right decision was made.

  3. What type of film is ‘After Dark’? After Dark is a British independent movie which was filmed in a house located in East London. As the budget was very restricted for the movie, this is seen as a disadvantage for us as potential distributers and production companies will turn away from investing in our media product. However, there are many techniques and camera shots used in our movie which represent professionalism and reflects real media products.

  4. Role of a production company The role of a production company is to have responsibility over the development and filming of a specific media product. They provide a plan or physical basis of work.

  5. Role of a Distribution company The role of a distribution company involves ensuring that as many people as possible go to watch the film. Also, distribution companies are responsible for setting release dates for a film. Other important roles of distribution companies are to provide access for the film for primary, secondary and tertiary audiences. Easy ways to do this is through distributing the movie to many different cinemas over a wide location.

  6. How we chose our production company We first chose to go with a large company who was part of a huge conglomerate, however After exploring many ideas with my group we decided to create our own production line named ‘Manjot Films’ as this had a simple yet sophisticated twist to it. We found this fit as I was the main cameraman and director and so it made sense to put my name in the production company.

  7. Manjot Films Manjot Films is a British independent production company who specialize in producing thriller movies. It was founded in 2006 and has found a pedigree in the thriller genre. This is great for films such as ours as the production company can get the film the reception and views which are needed in order for it to succeed. As a new and established production company I believe it can bring a sense of uniqueness to our thriller trailer.

  8. Distributors There were two main contenders which stood out to our group. These were Lionsgate Entertainment and The Weinstein Company. After a lot of research and discussion we cam to a final decision to choose The Weinstein Company to distribute our thriller. There were many reasons why we all agreed to this. However, the main reason was that The Weinstein Company distributed the movie ‘Scream’ which received a huge amount of reception and received an overall box office amount of $173,046,663. Our opening scene was compared to the movie Scream and so we decided to go with the Weinstein brothers.

  9. The Weinstein Company The Weinstein Company is a distributing company which was founded in 1979. The distributing company was created by two brothers named Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Evidently the name was created as the two brothers shared the same surname. TWC have a major foothold in the Thriller genre as they have distributed many films including ‘Derailed’ which was extremely successful and managed to gross $12,211,986 on the opening weekend. The worldwide gross for the movie was $57,479,076. This encouraged our decision dramatically as it showed how much of a pedigree The Weinstein Company had in the thriller genre and film industry.

  10. Ways in which our film can be marketed There are many ways in which our thriller film can be marketed. These include sharing it through Social network sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Both of these social networking sites have a huge fan base and millions of people log on everyday. They are especially popular with teenagers who range between our target audience ages. This is why we believe sharing our video through these websites is a great idea. Our media product has also been posted on to YouTube where again millions of people watch videos everyday. There is a huge chance our thriller could go viral through YouTube as it is so easy to access and find.

  11. Where can it be shown? The main places ‘After Dark’ could be shown or exhibited are cinemas which have a high reputation. Cinemas such as the ‘Vue’ in Westfield Stratford City are a great location for the film. This is because the area and shopping centre attracts many teenagers who fit into the target age range. This will then bring audiences in and make them want to watch the movie.
