Moon Phases. Remember there are 4 main phases of Illumination: New Moon = BLACK 1 st Quarter = ½ lit Full Moon = fully illuminated 3 rd Quarter = ½ lit 2 descriptive phases: Waxing and Waning Crescent (Waxing crescent, waning crescent) Gibbous (Waxing gibbous, waning gibbous)

Moon Phases • Remember there are 4 main phases of Illumination: • New Moon = BLACK • 1st Quarter = ½ lit • Full Moon = fully illuminated • 3rd Quarter = ½ lit • 2 descriptive phases: Waxing and Waning • Crescent (Waxing crescent, waning crescent) • Gibbous (Waxing gibbous, waning gibbous) • Begin cycle with New Moon and go counterclockwise.

  4. 1st Quarter½ lit

  5. Waxing GibbousGaining illumination, more than ½ lit

  6. Full MoonFully illuminated

  7. Waning GibbousLosing illumination but still more than ½ lit The moon is fading when it’s waning.

  8. 3rd Quarter½ lit

  9. Waning Crescentalmost back to black

  10. Back to New MoonBLACK
