  10. Intern Year • 4 Ward Months • Gold (team of 3 starting in August) • Neurology • Rehab • GI • Heme/Onc (team of 3 starting in Oct) • Guidelines

Intern Year • Ward Teams • Checkout • 6:30am/6:30pm • One intern and one upper level will stay until checkout to night float is complete (~7pm-8pm) • Weekday schedule to be decided by team • Other days leave when work is done, aim for 3pm • Weekends scheduled in amion • Long and short weekend with cross coverage • Gold & Heme/Onc • Purple & Green

  12. Intern Year • Wards • Interns will receive all floor calls • Keep both team and personal pager at all times • Don’t forget to pass off the team pagers at checkouts • Help upper level with admits

  13. Intern Year • Night Float • Arrive at 6:30pm for checkout • Floor call for 2 teams • Upper level always present • Help with admits • Night Float Rounds (7:30am or 9am) • Night Float Morning Report • Excused for daytime activities and clinic on pre- and post-night float days • See handout

  14. Intern Year • ER • 16 eight hour shifts- 6-8pts/shift (don’t forget to log!!) • 7a-3p • 3p-11p • 1p-9p • 1 weekend of night float, 1 weekend ER shifts • Case Presentation • Procedure Time • Friday Mornings – 7:30am in Anesthesia • Attempt at least 5 intubations, need 3 successful • Attempt at least 5 LPs, need 3 successful • Policy and Procedure handout

  15. Intern Year • Well Baby • Touro (on Prytania) • Emailed Schedule and Orientation Packet • Present all mornings (unless you have clinic) • Only 1 resident per afternoon • Subspecialty clinics (Ortho, ENT, Dental) • Delivery log • 12/month • ICD9/CPT code: 99464

Minimal Call • All months except Wards, ICU • 1-2 weekends of night float • Floor call for 2 teams (Fri, Sat & Sun night) • Help with admits as well • Excused on Friday and Monday day duties • Note float • While on weekend night float, may be asked to stay on Saturday/Sunday to help with notes • When: 22+patients on team or otherwise decided by upper levels/chiefs • Out by 9AM

  19. Miscellaneous • Interns switch on the first day of the month • Upper levels switch on the last day of the month • You must get checkout the day prior to starting a ward or ICU team • Noon conference prior to upper level switch day designated for signout

  20. Miscellaneous • Student Notes • You will often see patients with a medical student • You must review/sign their note as well as write your own note • Your note must contain: • A subjective, at least 2 vital signs, your own physical exam, any pertinent labs, and your own assessment and plan

  23. Meal Tickets • Distributed the first week of every month • Number based on rotation and calls • You will not get meal tickets if you have delinquent charts! • If no meal card, tell the cafeteria worker you are a resident • $1.50 for most meals

  24. Conferences • SIGN IN!! • Attendance is logged and you will need 150 conferences (12.5/month) to advance to second year • Schedule • Emailed every month • Posted • Lounge, ER, NICU, 2 center, on chief resident page

  25. Conferences • Morning Report • M/T/Th/F • 8-9am; must arrive by 8:10 to get credit • Always in 2 center • Given by chiefs • You will be scheduled to provide cases for morning reports throughout the year • Keep copies of interesting H&Ps or the patient name/MR#

  26. Conferences • Noon Conference • M/T/Th/F • 12:00!, must arrive by 12:10 to get credit • 2 center; given by faculty • Grand Rounds • 1st, 3rd, 5th Wednesday • Auditorium ; 8-9am • Faculty from LSU and visiting faculty • Susan will email dates/topics

Conferences • Case conference/M&M • Wednesdays in Auditorium or 2 center at 12pm • Given by upper level residents • Housestaff • 3rd Wednesday of the month at 12pm • 2 center LUNCH!! provided • Class Housestaff • Every month, Rooms TBA • Professionalism series (quarterly, mandatory) • Look for Intern Conference series!

  28. Compliance • Compliance is downloaded on the first weekday of the month • Conferences: 12.5/month • Core Modules • Step 3 – must be taken by June of intern year • PREP • 20 questions/month • www.pedialink.org • AAP ID and Password – TBA • July – paper copy of questions • Duty hours

Compliance • Continuity Clinic • 3 clinics/month = 36 clinics/year • 3 patients/clinic = 9 patients/month • 1st qtr = 27pts, 2nd = 54, 3rd = 81, 4th = 108 • Held accountable quarterly for clinic/pt # • Can make up clinics during lighter months • Board Review (see Handout) • Two Observed H/P’s • 1 by end of Dec, 2 total by end of May

  30. Professionalism Score • See policy • Tracked monthly; reset quarterly • Low scoring residents (-20 points) on two quarters in one academic year will be reported as “unprofessional” to the American Board of Pediatrics • Non-compliant residents will be assigned additional clinical duties (weekend night float)

  31. Duty Hours • 80 hours/week (averaged over 1 mo) • 16 hour shift or shorter • Goal 10 hours off after day shift (but must be 8) • 4 days off (averaged over 1 month)

  35. Working with Upper Levels • First day: expectations reviewed • Rules, timelines, rounds, etc. • Should see ALL patients with/behind you • Constructive feedback! Seek it out! • Teach you! • Help you in every way that they can!
