  1. History of Texas Oil By Drew Harding and Daniel Houghton

  2. Finding the Oil • At first, no Texas wells could produce oil, and many companies left the area discouraged. • One man, Patillo Higgins remained convinced of oil in Texas. • After numerous failures he, with help from Anthony Lucas, finally found Spindletop…

  3. 1901 - Spindletop • Before Spindletop, a successful oil well produced about 20 barrels a day. • Spindletop produced over 100,000 barrels a day, more oil than all other wells in the world combined.

  4. After Spindletop… • In a few months the population quadrupled, and over 200 wells were built. • The gusher created huge oil companies, such as Gulf Oil, Amoco and Exxon. • Over 50 million dollars was made in only a few months off of these wells.

  5. New Industries • The oil industries success in Texas allowed for oil to replace coal as a fuel. • This allowed for the creation of cars, planes, and new types of ships and trains. • New ways to build wells were also developed…

  6. Finding Oil • Geologist find oil using compressed air guns, thumper trucks, or explosives. • Shock waves are shot through the ground and reflect differently depending on the material

  7. Texas Oil

  8. Drill Bits Mud • As the drills go down towards the oil, mud and other materials are transported back through the pipe. • The sides of the hole is covered with metal in a process called casing Oil

  9. Extracting Oil • Once oil has been discovered, oil wells suck the oil out of the ground using pressure.
