  1. Thai Access Grid (TAG)Experiment and Deployment of Access Grid Technology in Thailand Putchong Uthayopas, Ph.D Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, Thailand Email: pu@ku.ac.th http://www.thaigrid.net

  2. Introduction to Access Grid Technology • Multimedia group-to-group Interactive Collaboration Environment that relies on • IP Multicast Backbone • MBone Tools (VIC, RAT , SDR) • Access Grid nodes are "designed spaces” that provide a high-quality compelling user experience.

  3. Benefits • Quick and real life remote meeting experience • Help create a virtual organization at a personal level • Allows frequent meeting between research groups • Reducing transportation cost

  4. Applications • Distance Learning • Remote collaboration • Virtual Research Center • Remote Interview • Multinational Trade negotiation

  5. Problems in Thailand • Most of the networks still have no Multicast support • Policy and security concern • The lack of users request and applications • Low bandwidth for most part of the country • Lack of technical expertise in this area

  6. Thai Access Grid Project • A collaboration project under Thaigrid Project • Goal • Built a collaborative environment in Thailand based on Access Grid Technology • Low-cost hardware solution • Low network speed, with and without multicast • Solution based on Free software • Focus on quick deployment of personel station and small side ag-node

  7. Participating Members • Kasetsart University (KU) • King Mongkut's Institute of Technology North Bangkok (KMITNB) • Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) • Looking for more!

  8. Past Events • December 3, 2001 • First meeting • KU and KMITNB • December 21, 2001 • KU, KMITNB, VisLab at U of Sydney and NUS • January 10, 2002 • Remote tutorial (MPI) • KU and SUT

  9. TAG Experimental Site at KU

  10. Omega ProjectOpen Multi-Environment Grid Adapter • Goal • investigate the infrastructure that appropriate for developing country in Asia pacific region • Make access grid really accessible to low computer expertise users. • allows mobile user to be part of the access grid meeting using Mobile Personal Access Grid Station (MPAGS). • Technology • Peer-to-Peer Implementation • Automatics and easy to use • Based on XML , Web services Technology

  11. AG-Node AG-Node Omega Grid Architecture OMEGA-AP B OMEGA-SS D D S OMEGA-SD Multicast Network Bridge Array Cluster B B B B B Non Multicast MPAGS Multicast Network B S

  12. MPAGS (Mobile Personal Access Grid System) • Combination of • Laptop • Wireless LAN • Video Camera • Access Grid Software • Allows small group and mobile user to participate in access grid session • Multicast is not required

  13. APAG (Asia Pacific Access Grid) Group • Members • Visualization Laboratory, U. of Sydney • NUS • KU • KMITNB • Experimenting with how to deploy access grid technology in Asia Pacific Mailing list: apag@prg.cpe.ku.ac.th

  14. APAG Testing Topology

  15. Conclusion • Access grid is a very useful technology • There are problems that must be solved, the software solution must be developed (Omega project) • Collaboration in Thailand and Asia Pacific is important • Define standard and best practice • Connection through global access grid community • For more information • http://www.thaigrid.net • http://www.thaigrid.net/tag/omega.html
