  3. Phase Definitions • Waxing- “add light” • right side of the moon gains more light • Waning- “to go away from light or remove light” • right side of the moon gets darker

  7. What Causes the Phases of the Moon? • half of the moon is always receiving light from the Sun

  8. What Causes the Phases of the Moon? • As the moon revolves around the Earth, it looks like the amount of light reflected from the Sun changes

  9. Revolution… The moon’s revolution around the Earth is: 1.in a counter clockwise direction (from right to left) 2. cyclic and predictable • What does cyclic mean?

  10. What does cyclic mean? Cyclic: means a repeated pattern… we see this as moon phases • One lunar phase cycle = 29 ½ days (new moon to new moon) 29 ½ days = about one month = about 4 weeks

  11. So… to move from New Moon to First Quarter, it takes about one week
