  10. PVC Compounding A Model for each case:

  11. PVC Compounding The Ideal Batch Size. Best Output does not mean working the equipment at it´s maximum batch size, since processing time also increases. Each case requires an ideal load for optimum performance.

  12. PVC Compounding Optimizing PVC Compounding: • Single Rule: There is no single rule. . • First Idea: Add stabilizers and plastisizers once the resin has reached around 60-80° C, for an improved liquid absortion into the resin. • Second Idea: If the liquids are preheated before feeding them, batch time can be lowered up to 1 minute. • Third Idea: Following powders can be added in several ways. If a big load of powder is fed, try to avoid lowering the temperature of the batch, by adding it slowly. • Once all the components have been fed, a 1 to 1.5 minutes final mix is usually required. • THEORY: A proper dispersion is based in adequate Mixing Times & Temperatures. • AN INTERESTING STRATEGY (not to be used in all cases): • 1.- Preheat the mixer to 100° C and add the resin at high speed.. • 2.- Heat the resin to 70-80° C, so it may expand. • 3.- Add liquids, if possible preheated to 55° C. Mix until they may be incorporated. • 4.- Feed remaining powders and have final mix of 1 to 1.5 minutes. • ATRACTIVE TIPS: • It is important to have a proper vortex. Adjust the attack angle of the internal deflector and mixing blades. • Batch Size: A larger batch size does not necessarily means larger productivity, since mixing times also increases. There is an ideal ratio of Batch Size/ Batch Time which maximizes productivity.

  13. PVC Compounding PVC Cooling Rules: • PVC is a bad heat transfer element. Tends to keep the heat that got in the mixer. If it is going to be stored, it has to be cooled. • If a cooled water is used (down to 7° C, commonly obtained in conventional chillers), cooling time is reduced up to 50%. • Each case requires a top temperature at the cooler discharge. In order to fully optimize cooling time, work should be done for the maximum allowable temperature (discharging at 46°C against 43°C could mean several minutes). • Tips to optimize cooling:1.- Avoid moisture condensations inside the cooler by installing a By-Pass valve for the cool water, for periods in which the cooler is not used, to avoid over-cooling. • 2.- Periodically clean and wash the cooling jacket. 3.- Do not over fill the cooler. • 4.- As an option, some cool powders, such as filling agents, can be fed directly to the cooler, which greatly reduces cooling time. The mixing action of the cooler plows mix and incorporates these powders.

  15. Littleford Day Rental Program W-10 High-Intensity Rental Mixer VERTICAL MIXER FOR PVC COMPOUNDING Compact, high intensity mixer designed for applications that require a high amount of mechanical shear (such as PVC compounding or pigments dispersion). The mixing action of this vertical bowl unit is accomplished by the high speed rotation of the impellers which consist of a horizontal plow or initiator setting the mix in motion in conjunction with an angular plow or accelerator which imparts the shear into the mix. The high speed rotation of the mixing impellers creates a high shear pumping vortex mixing action which keeps the mix in a combined rotary, horizontal and vertical movement, resulting in fast homogenization. The mixing vortex is controlled by a deflector vane that enters the mix from the lid and by the rotating speed of the impellers. The deflector vane is equipped with a thermocouple for measuring product temperature and an injection tube for liquid addition capability through the vane. It discharges through a manually operated plug valve at the front of the unit. Installed in an integrated base mounted on casters, Specifications 3 HP Motor. Variable Drive. Removable Mixing Elements. Ammeter & Tachometer. 75 PSI Jacket. Movable Deflector Vane. Integrated Base Mounted on Casters. Weight (Aprox.): 400 Pounds. 44” 25” 28”
