  1. Graphing Motion Notes #1 Analyzing graphs with constant rate

  2. What are the parts of a graph? What is the x-axis? Horizontal (Time) What are the units for the x-axis? Seconds What is the y-axis? Vertical (Position) What are the units for the y-axis? Meters Y-axis X-axis

  3. How do I remember what variable goes on what axis? • Think Romeo and Juliet! • When Juliet died, Romeo said, “WHY”! Why!!!

  4. How do I read a graph? What is the independent variable? X-axis What we manipulate What is the dependent variable? Y-axis What responds What is the scale for this x-axis? 1 second What is the scale for this y-axis? 10 meters DV IV

  5. How do I remember which axis is IV and which is DV? ependent Variable esponds -axis anipulated ndependent Variable -axis D R Y M I X

  6. What does LINEAR mean? • A line in a graph that is straight. • This means the object is moving at constant speed. Distance (m) Time (s)

  7. What is the slope of the line? • The slope of the line is the angle of the line. • We use the letter k or m Distance (m) Time (s)

  8. What does the slope of the line mean on a distance v. time graph? • The slope of the line is the speed of the object. Remember: r = d/t Speed = Distance Time

  9. What is the equation for slope? Slope (k) = rise run Slope (k) = y2 – y1 x2– x1

  10. How do you calculate slope or rate (k)? Step 1: Pick two points on the line • If you are NOT told to use SPECIFIC data points, you may use any 2 points on the line. • try to make sure the point is in a corner of the squares on the graph. If possible, pick (0,0) as one of your points • You must use points that are on the line. • If the line goes UP the slope is positive (+) • If the line goes DOWN the slope isnegative (-)

  11. How do you calculate slope or rate (k)? Step 1: Pick two points on the line What 2 points are shown here? • You must use points that are on the line. • If the line goes UP the slope is positive (+) • If the line goes DOWN the slope isnegative (-) 10 20 30 40 50 (2,30) Distance (m) (0,0) 0 1 2 3 4 Time (s)

  12. How do you calculate slope or rate (k)? Step 2: Make a triangle • Connect the two points with a triangle. 10 20 30 40 50 Distance (m) 0 1 2 3 4 Time (s)

  13. How do you calculate slope or rate (k)? Step 3: Find the rise • The side of the triangle on the y-axis. 10 20 30 40 50 Distance (m) Rise = 30 0 1 2 3 4 Time (s)

  14. How do you calculate slope or rate (k)? Step 4: Find the run • The side of the triangle on the x-axis. 10 20 30 40 50 Distance (m) Rise = 30 Run = 2 0 1 2 3 4 Time (s)

  15. How do you calculate slope or rate (k)? Step 5: Find the slope Slope (k) = rise run (k) = 30 2 (k) = 15 m/s The object’s speed was 15 m/s 10 20 30 40 50 Distance (m) Rise = 30 Run = 2 0 1 2 3 4 Time (s)

  16. Summary:Write 1 paragraph about how to find the slope of a line and describe what slope means on a distance vs. time graph.OUTPUT: Practice
