SD 10 and 51 Aboriginal Information Circles • Project Inquiry: To what extent will participation in an Aboriginal Culture, Information and Issues Circle, via a shared learning/Moodle format, develop a teacher professional learning community and increase student Aboriginal cultural awareness, knowledge and attitudes, as measured by the Aboriginal Understandings rubric developed by SD 68?

  5. Student Reflections • I have really enjoyed …having my eyes opened about the issue in the Atawapiskat First Nation. I have realized just how hard life can be for Aboriginal people when they live in a bad situation and environment … I can’t even start to understand how much pressure must be on their shoulders. I have also learned how little the government is doing about this, and how they need to start taking action on this horrible issue. Grade 9 student

  6. Student Reflections • I agree … that we need to do more to help the people in Attawapiskat. They are not being treated fairly and they have poor homes … It's unfair that the government is doing nothing to stop this. Grade 5 student • We are helping people in Africa when we have people in Canada we need to help... Let’s all try to make it a better place to live for the Aboriginal people. Grade 5 student

  7. Student Reflections • What stands out to me is that the Aboriginals have faced so many difficulties. The Aboriginals have gone to residential schools, have housing shortages, have no running water and have their land taken away. I have also learned that like Chief Seattle said, we do not own the earth, the earth owns us. I think that people should realize that Aboriginals are treated so badly and treat them better. Grade 5 student

  8. Student Reflections • I have learned that …they also don't have safe water or houses to sleep in at night. They don't even have a kitchen sink if they had them it would be like getting a Christmas present is the middle of June. We can help the Aboriginal people. Grade 4 student • The government needs to step up. Grade 7 student

Surprises and Next Steps • Time extension requested by students and teachers – from 2 weeks to 3 weeks • Degree of personal and professional learning and risk-taking and engagement from all teachers • Despite technological glitches, high motivation • Cross grades 4-12; honoured diverse voices • High student interest in differentiated text: photos, videos, links to articles, stories, podcasts • Interest expressed in K-12 Circle for Fall 2012 • We will use podcasts/mp3 files as well as written forums to further differentiate demonstrations of learning • We plan to have students help choose text as well as have a range of teacher choices
