Long known as a regional retail center, Oskaloosa has developed its retail sector to a level that would normally be found in a city twice its size. The Oskaloosa area's industrial base is surprisingly diversified. Over 30 firms produce such diverse products as pneumatic fastening devices, high fructose corn syrup, feed conveyance systems, fire hydrants and water valves, small hand tools and instruments, hydrostatic drives, soft drinks and bottled water, processed egg products, and feed additives. Other area firms publish concert band and orchestral music or supply temporary, mobile lighting systems for athletic events, motion pictures, and special events. Oskaloosa and Mahaska County citizens enjoy a superb quality of life. Three fine higher education facilities, William Penn University, Vennard College, and a satillite Indian Hills Community College, provide the area with numerous cultural opportunities, diverse educational resources, and a wide variety of athletic events. An excellent primary and secondary school system is well-equipped and the facilities are first-rate. The Mahaska Hospital is a 77-bed hospital with 27 physicians (including 15 specialists) serving Oskaloosa, Eddyville and the surrounding area.
