Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometer coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south. It covers an area of 796,095 square kilometers, approximately the combined land areas of France and the United Kingdom. Because of a number of invasions and settlements for thousands of years, the area has been occupied by many empires and dynasties including the Persian empires, Islamic caliphates and the Mauryan, Mongol, Mughal, Sikh and British empires. The population also makes it the second largest Muslim country after Indonesia. By 2030, it will overtake Indonesia as the largest Muslim country in the world because of its high population growth rate. Its capital city, Islamabad, has approximately 1.2 million. The city was built during the 1960s to replace Karachi as Pakistan’s capital. Karachi, with 15 million, is the largest city in Pakistan. It is the country’s center of banking, industry and trade. Life expectancy at birth is 63 years for females and 62 years for males. Mortality below five was at 97 per 1,000 lives in 2006. About 20 percent of the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 a day. Pakistan is a multilingual country with more than 60 spoken languages. English is the official language and it is used in official business, government, and legal contracts. Urdu is the lingua franca and national language in Pakistan.
