  2. Need/Purpose • This is the “Century of Biology” • Numerous/new reported biological events • Human/wildlife diseases (i.e., West Nile Virus, Avian Flu) • Invasive species causing billions in damages • Global biodiversity is declining • Increasing numbers of imperiled species • Need for “sustained” biological informatics components

  3. IBF Objectives • Develop key partnerships with leaders of the international bioinformatics community • Promote information exchange and enhance work performed by partners • Promote bioinformatics research and applications development • Conduct outreach activities to generate awareness and funding for the bioinformatics community

  4. IBF History/Process • Industry funded initial IBF start-up • Articles of Incorporation to US Internal Revenue Service (September 9, 2003) • IRS approved 501 (c ) (3), February 2005 (1.5 years) • Initial IBF sponsor is in place • IBF formally ready to receive funds • Ready to go to work raising awareness and funds

  5. Fundraising Focus – leading biodiversity informatics initiatives • Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) • National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) • Catalogue of Life (Species 2000 and ITIS) • Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) • Pacific Basin Information Facility (PBIF)

  6. Funding Mechanisms • Funding sponsors (government and industry) • Contributions by leading bioinformatics organizations • Contributions by industry, foundations, non-government organizations, etc. • Project funding (i.e., grants and contracts)

Organization • Located in the Washington, DC area • Close to World Bank and Organization of American States (OAS) • Founding trustees (Bonnie Carroll, Dr. Jack Hill Catriona Macdonald) • Staff (Administrative Assistant – Kathryn Johnson) • Successful in raising significant funds for biodiversity informatics

  9. Organization (continued) • Participated in the creation and implementation of IABIN • Very knowledgeable and interested in IABIN goals • Aware of applications of biodiversity information • Ready to assist IABIN in its sustainability initiative • Board (under development, with position for IABIN representative)

  10. Year 1 Activities • Key partnerships/agreements • Examples (lay audiences) using biological information to effective decision and policy making • Articles on the value of biological information in news media • Field trips to educate decision makers (government and media) on the value of biological information • Industry to help document the value of bioinformatics (i.e., to enhance productivity and profitability) • Educate the funding community of the value of biological information, and encourage increased investment in bioinformatics research and applications

  11. IABIN Action Items (“with” actively participating Member countries and IABIN Director/Secretariat)- Partially under Component 4 of PIP) • Sign agreement between IABIN and IBF • Transfer initial IABIN funding to IBF • Select IBF Board member from IABIN • Select fund-raising committee (4-5)

  12. Action Items (continued) • Hold internal fund-raising workshop (10-15) • Develop sustainability (fund-raising) plan • Identify priority funding opportunities • Create customize marketing materials • Engage potential sponsors
