3. Introduction: The Need for a Redemption Plan God’s kingship and authority over mankind was given to Adam in the Garden of Eden but was subverted to Satan because of Adam’s disobedience. Because of this disobedience, man and God’s entire creation is said to be in a “fallen state”. It’s the state of decay that leads to death, and it’s a condition that can only be remedied by God. God regained control by becoming man, living amongst us, and living without sin. Now Christ is the ruler not just of today but also in the future.

4. Corruption Through Kings • “In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years. Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him. He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria. Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to arouse the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than did all the kings of Israel before him. 6. King David • King David: man after God’s own heart; Messiah would come from line of David. • King David’s Sin: • Adultery with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:1-5) • Murder of Uriah (2 Samuel 11:14-15)

King Solomon • King Solomon: peace and prosperity in Israel during his reign; blessed with extreme wisdom. • King Solomon’s Sin • 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:1-3) • Intermarry with those who do not believe in God (1 Kings 11:4-9) • Obsessed with power and wealth Result was that Israel was plagued with depression, immorality, worshipping idols, murder, pride, but there was a cycle of repentance and restoration

The Cycle of Sin ‘Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD had compassion on them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them.  But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.’ (Judges 2:18-29)

Corruption Through Mankind • “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath”. Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned---the law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. 14. Summary • We are all connected with the first Adam (the natural and legal head of the human race) as guilty sinners, and so are included in the death sentence. However, all who are connected with the last Adam, Jesus, through repentance and faith in His redeeming work, are forgiven, received the free gift of righteousness, and have passed from death into life. • It is only by God that the creation of God can be restored. It is only God that can restore man, and only God who can defeat death. For what man has the power to restore creation to it’s original condition? What man has the ability to remove evil from all mankind? And what man is there amongst us (or that has ever lived) is able to overcome death? There is none but Jesus, the Son of God.

15. Discussion questions • List some concrete examples (from society today and in your own personal life) that the world we live in is a constant state of decay. • When is the appropriate time to cry out to God? What are the conditions necessary for Him to respond to our cry?
