  3. Qsxa Mission • z Educate the citizensof Orlando/ Orange County and America about Black history, which is a vital source of American history

  4. Qsxa Mission • z The BHCOC is committed to improving dialogue as it pertains to the contributions African- Americans have made to this community

  5. Qsxa Mission • z The BHCOC is also committed to improving literacy in our community by donating funds to students who wish to continue their education by obtaining graduate and undergraduate degrees

  6. Qsxa • z I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for the pledge payment of $10,000 that the Black History Committee of Orange County, Inc. has made to the students at the University of Central Florida on April 3, 2007

  7. Qsxa • z The Black History Committee has donated over $100,000 to local schools, colleges Universities in Orlando and the State of Florida. Pineloch Elementary, Valencia Community College, University of Central Florida, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Bethune Cookman University Edward Waters University, Florda Memorial University, Miles College and more.

  9. Qsxa Groups at Risk • z African Americans 10 to 24 years old find Homicide as the leading cause of death. Homicide is the second leading cause of death for Hispanics. The third leading cause of death for American Indians, Alaska natives and Asian/pacific Islanders.

  10. Qsxa Direct and Indirect cost of Youth Violence exceed $158 billion every year • z In addition to causing injury and death youth violence affects communities by: 1. Increasing the cost of health care 2. Reducing Productivity 3. Decreasing Property Values 4. Disrupting Social Services

  11. Qsxa 6th Annual Black History Gala • z Guest speaker for 2008 Black History Gala is Dr.Alvin Poussaint. Dr. Poussaint is one of the nation’s leading Psychiatrists. He is Director of the Media Center of the Judge Baker Children Center in Boston.

  12. Qsxa 6th Annual Black History Gala • z Dr. Poussaint is a professor of Psychiatry and faculty associate dean for student affairs at Harvard Medical School, and an expert on race relations in America.

  13. Qsxa • z The Doctor was a consultant for the Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992 and A Different World from 1986 to 1993. He ensured that the two television series presented positive black images.
