  2. MoammarGadhafi • Has been the leader of Libya since September 1, 1969 • Overthrew King Idris of Libya • Established the Libyan Arab Republic • 42 years in power • Believes he is defending his country from crusader aggression • He has stated in a speech, “that this is time for Libya to rise to glory.”

  3. How would Egypt’s uprising lead to Libya’s uprising and other uprisings throughout the middle east?

Libya • Gadhafi orders air strikes on his own people and even ground forces. • Allied Forces help protect the revolution against the Libyan government. • The United States and French order air strikes against Libyan forces. Idea was to ground the Libyan forces. • Administered no fly zones, and protection of the people against Gadhafi’s forces • Battles between pro and anti- Gadhafi forces resulting in bloody conflicts

  5. Effort against Libya • Denmark, Canada, France, United States supply fighter jets to the war effort. • Italy, France and Spain supply air bases. • Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UK, France, United States, Canada, Denmark back the deployment of the no fly zone. • As of Thursday the air force has employed a successful no fly zone.

  6. Effects on the United States • Stock market falls ( Gadhafi orders his troops to destroy oil refineries) • Countries including the United States (Send Navy ships with missiles) European Union (Air force/ ground troops). • Stand off still in progress

Cost of War • The United States has spent up to over $1 billion in the assault • As a coalition they have fired over 162 missiles priced at 1 million to 1.5 million a piece and have dispatched B-2 stealth bombers- round trip from Missouri- to drop 2,000 pound bombs. Total flying time 25 hours…. Cost per hour: at least 10,000 dollars

  8. Japan/ Triple disaster • Damage from Japans earthquake and Tsunami could reach total of up to $235 billion dollars. • Rebuilding could take up to 5 years • Trade and finance will be effected • 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Honshu

Earthquake/Tsunami • Death tolls are now tallying up to 18,400 from both disasters and still pilling up each day. • Cannot view the bodies of loved ones because they are in a state of rigor mortise when they are found. • Turning purple starting to decompose, release stench, fish and crabs are eating parts of them.

Nuclear Power Plant • Nuclear power plants creates energy • Nuclear meltdown and radiation leak has contaminated food and water near the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex. • Effects of radiation on the human body: • Nausea, vomiting, headache, some loss of white blood cells. • Long run can cause different forms of cancer
