    1. Theme 2: Emulsions & social issues Everett Crews Jean-Francois Argillier

    2. The session was overly subscribed – about 30 papers submitted for publication reflecting the importance in the trends for “Green “and Sustainable” chemistry covering a broad range of industrial applications. It was evident from the papers that appreciation for green chemistry is growing fast and is certain to capture major shares in the industrial and personal care markets within the coming decade. Among the papers three key themes were reflected: Raw materials from natural resources; sugar starches, replacing raw materials based on fossil carbon. Environmentally friendly, biodegradable, non flammable solvents to replace products, HAPs and flammable, toxic or halogenated solvents. Greater emphasize on environmentally safe, biodegradable, green emulsifiers for waterborne formulations.

    3. Workshop 2.1: Green Chemistry, change of Raw material and Resources CONCLUSIONS Raw materials described ranged from vegetable oils, Sugars and Carbohydrates The raw materials described are freely available. However demonstrating the scale up in industrial scale to meet the cost performance targets against the synthetics, remain a challenge APPLICATIONS In the field of detergents, house hold cleaners, personal care and paints, the public demand for sustainable green products should be emphasized. There are much more goings on in these industries than the papers were suggesting. Bitumen application (green surfactant and flux oils) were well represented as shown by the number of papers submitted Unavoidable >> new challenges both at the scientific and industrial level

    4. CONTEXT: average recovery rate 33% >> EOR non conventional oil, heavy oils... WORKSHOP 7 papers, mostly on heavy oils and rupture of water in crude oil emulsion combination of physical means (wash tank, magnetic or electric field) with chemical formulations developing interfacial characterization on real crude oil system helps to improve operational design, but generalization still needed Chemical EOR: HLD approach for formulation optimization need for robust formulation COMING CHALLENGE? high water production during reservoir exploitation (water:crude oil 3:1) produced water management: how to give positive value to the water?

    5. CONCLUSIONS Tendency to improve life time of different materials by the use of emulsion (ageing porous asphalt, remediation of soil) People take more and more into account the production of more sustainable process and products (life cycle) Most of these technologies are in a preliminary step and we recommend to work on it more in deeply.
