  1. Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling Psychological Service Centres and Clinics in Newcastle – Choosing the Best from the Rest

  2. Choosing the right Clinical Psychologist or Counsellor can be overwhelming. There are a number of different wellbeing clinics, psychological service centres, and individual therapists available, making it difficult to choose the right one for you.

  3. Tips for Choosing the Best Psychological Service Centre or Clinic for You

  4. Finding the best clinical psychologist, counsellor or therapist might not feel that easy. From initial assessment and treatment through to relapse prevention, many things matter when it comes to choosing the best psychologist or counsellor. Out of the many available, there will be some that are more skilled and specialised than others.

  5. In order to help you know to look for in a therapist, we have compiled some tips below to make it easier:

  6. Qualification and Registration Whether you are being seen at a wellbeing clinic, psychological service centre, or in your own home, all Clinical Psychologists, Counsellors and Psychotherapists should have the necessary documents to prove they are qualified in their role. Further to this, Clinical Psychologists should also be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) if providing services to the public. Many therapists will have further accreditation and be on the register for the British Psychological Society (BPS) or their equivalent organisation.

  7. Expert Knowledge of Your Problem Check that the therapists offering you psychological services have specialist knowledge of your problem. This may sound obvious however some therapists choose to maintain working with a wide range of difficulties and maintain a general skillset rather than choosing to specialise in an area. In most cases, it is better to work with a specialist rather than someone that sees a wide range of problems or clients.

  8. Clinical Psychologists and counsellors undergo assessed therapy training before being able to offer psychological services to the public. As well as ensuring they have completed their training, check that your therapist also continues to engage with further ongoing training (Continuing Professional Development, or CPD) as the science behind therapy and what works for whom changes as new approaches are discovered. Comprehensive & Thorough Training

  9. Depth of Experience When a psychological service centre or clinic has multiple therapists, consider choosing the one that has the most experience in working with your specific problem. More experience often means the therapist has a wider knowledge (and therefore particularly skilled) in working with that difficulty or client group. In order to do so they have often dedicated their time (and often their own money) into developing their skills and interest in that area. Where possible, choose to see a specialist rather than a therapist that works with a general range of problems.

  10. The Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling Psychological Service Centre All therapists at Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling, whether Clinical Psychologist, counsellor or Psychotherapist, specialise in a certain way of working (such as with individuals, children, couples or families), therapeutic approach (counselling, CBT, mindfulness, family therapy, etc.) and/or specialise in working with certain problems. Many of our therapists have also completed further training in therapies such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), CBT for Insomnia (CBT- I) and Eye Movement Desensitation and Reprocssing (EMDR).
