  1. Air Pollution Feb. 7, 2012 Pd. 5 By: Michael Yelverton Emma Buttridge Angela Rust

  2. The Problem • The problem is that in this world today air pollution is very broad. Many things in this world today help contribute to this growing cause. If nothing is done soon the outcome will be bad. • Everyday the average human inhales 20,000 liters of air. Every time we take a breathe we risk inhaling dangerous chemicals.

  3. The Problem Cont. • However this problem does not only effect humans, but also the environment and the animals that live in it. I can harm them bodily to the point where they could possibly die. • Everybody should care about this because it is largely affecting the planet we live on and everything around us.

  4. Causes • There are many things that can cause air pollution. • Two of the biggest creators of air pollution is oil refinery and coal refinery. When these things are burned they let off and enormous amount of gas. • Forest fires, volcanic eruptions, wind erosion, and pollen dispersal are also big contributors.

  5. Causes Cont. • Yet everyday millions are cars are being driven and polluting the air. • Large factories let of large amounts of pollutants everyday. • There are so many other ways that let off pollutants.

  6. Affects of Air Pollution • Major health effects • 50,000 people in the U.S. alone die due to air pollution

  7. Scope • The problem of air pollution is not a local or state problem, but a nationwide problem. • Things need to be done all over the country to affect the problem. • Eventually the economy and environment will benefit from this.

  8. One Solution Is.. • To conserve energy. There are a lot of ways that we can preserve energy in our homes, and outside of homes. One easy way to do this is to turn off appliances when not in use. Along with this you can unplug unnecessary appliances when there not in use or until they need to be used. There are even power strips that you can get to minimize power use.

  9. Another solution • Another way to lower air pollution is to use energy efficient products. These products can range from energy efficient lights bulbs to energy efficient washers. They minimize the use of energy. Yet they do not only user less energy but can lower your electric and/or gas bill.

  10. Third Solution • The final way that really helps minimize air pollution is limiting how much you drive. There are several ways that you can do this. One way is to carpool with people from school or work. You could also use public transportation. Or maybe even walk or ride a bike to your destination.

  11. Best Solution • The best solution would be to use energy efficient appliances. Everyday we are using something in our house. A lot of the time there are lights on somewhere in the house. Most often there is some appliance being used. If the things we use everyday are more energy efficient then there will be a lot less energy used everyday and less chemicals going out creating less air pollution.

  12. Letter • Dear Senator Carper, • Air pollution is a big problem in this country. Every day we breathe in 20,000 liters of air and have the risk of inhaling dangerous chemicals. So reducing the pollutants that we put in the atmosphere should be very important to everyone that lives on the planet. Whenever you save energy you are not only save money but you are reducing the demand fossil fuels such as coil, oil, and natural gasses. When you burn less of the fossil fuels you are reducing the carbon dioxide that gets put into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is the primary contributor of global warming. • Energy efficient light bulbs and appliances are better for the environment. They cost more at the moment when you buy them but in the long run it will save you a lot of money and help save the environment and everyone that lives on it. Our solution that we came up with for this problem is to make it so stores can only sell energy efficient appliances and light bulbs. This would reduce the amount of energy that we would use and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide put into our atmosphere. The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is such a big deal because the carbon dioxide absorbs heat that is trying the leave the atmosphere. This is what is increasing the temperatures all over the world. • Please contact one of us at emmabuttridge@gmail.com or yelverton9997@gmail.com letting us know your decision on our solution to help reduce air pollution. Thank you for your time. • Sincerely, • Emma Buttridge & Michael Yelverton
