  2. Mary is the second largest city in Turkmenistan and lies about 350 km east of Ashgabat. It is the capital of the Mary Region, known as the province of Margiana in ancient times. Mary (Merv) was once known as the "Pearl of the East" and was the second city of Islam after Baghdad between the 8th-13th centuries; later it fell victim to a most horrific slaughter by the Mongols. Merv changed its name to Mary in 1937 and has grown into Turkmenistan's largest city. 

  3. One day tour to Mary, Merv Take a morning flight to Mary (370 km, 40 min.). Upon arrival drive to Merv (UNESCO) (40 km, 30 min.), an ancient city that was a major center of international trade and crafts located on the Silk Road. Afternoon visit History museum of region. Discover historical park with Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum, Large and Small Gyz Gala, ErkGala,Gyaur Gala, Keshk Fortresses, and others. Return to Mary, take an evening flight to Ashgabat (370 km, 40 min). Upon arrival transfer to hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
