  1. Geochemistry All Around Us Andrew Knudsen Lawrence University, Appleton, WI

  2. Acknowledgements • Jeff Clark and Marcia Bjornerud - my LU colleagues • Tony Hoch - my predecessor • Dave, Darrell, and Karin for all their work to put this together! • Mickey and Scott

  3. Overview • Background on Lawrence and this course • Goals • In the field - make the most of where you are! • A work in progress…

  4. What and Where is Lawrence University? • We are a small liberal arts college in NE WI • 3 faculty and ~5 graduates/year in geology

  5. Geology 240, Chemistry of the Earth: Low-Temperature Environments • For a variety of reasons (small department, shifting disciplines, my own interests) this course serves as an introduction to both mineralogical and geochemical processes. (Come see my poster for more on this)

  6. Goals and Purpose • Focus on process • Every geologist (and most mineralogists and geochemists) love being in the field! • Local systems • Environmental issues

  7. Where we go: • High Cliff State Park - equilibrium • Local wetland - atmosphere and DO • Local caves - dissolution and precipitation • Soil sampling • A local quarry - Groundwater and As

  8. High Cliff • Dolostone of the Niagran Escarpment • Some features there: • Variety of springs • Intensely jointed • Old lime kiln • Dolostone

  9. Dolostone, lots and lots of dolostone • Dolomitization • Recall that one of the goals/needs of the class is to cover both mineralogy and geochemistry • This is a great example! Calcite Dolomite

  10. Heckrodt Wetland • Previously installed monitoring wells • Redox • Biological interface • Contaminant tracking - alum dump

  11. Some Local Caves • See geochemistry in action! • Dissolution and Precipitation • And…

  12. They are fun!!! (Alex would be proud!!)

  13. Soil • Soils are everywhere (pretty much) • Crossroad of Mineralogy/Geo-chemistry/ Biology etc.

  14. An Environmental Issue:As in NE Wisconsin • Important Local Issue • As in pyrite released with oxidation

  15. A work in progress… • Continuing to evolve • Evolved since I posted the exercise! • Proposed larger scale water and soil testing program
