  1. Chayote (Sechiumedule) extract with yeast, Fermented and Distilled as Potential Bio Fuel Researchers: Cudillo, RazelVonn A. Canda, Bessy Marie L. Laviña, Jonesa Queen L.

  2. Background of the Study We all know that carbon dioxide is rapidly increasing, so we the researchers have thought for another source of fuel that is environment friendly, affordable and most especially available in our community. The fermented chayote produces ethanol that is one of the component in making gasoline. It produces less carbon dioxide than the commercial one Significance of the Study Since air pollution is a major problem that is caused by rapidly increasing carbon dioxide produced by factories, vehicles and etc. This study helps to minimize the emission of carbon dioxide from vehicles, this also provides potential economic, environmental and health benefits. Scope and Limitations This study focused only on determining if chayote extract is a good source of bio fuel. This was conducted at the science laboratory of Caraga Regional Science High School, from the month of July 2011 to February 2012.

  3. Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine if chayote extract with yeast that undergone fermentation and distillation can be a source of bio fuel. Moreover, this study seeks answer to the following: 1. Is there a presence of ethanol from the fermented chayote? 2. How long will it take to distill a fermented chayote? 3. During the fermentation, what are the changes that chayote extract undergo? 4. Will the finished product can cause corrosiveness to the motorcycle tank?

  4. Since we only have experimental group, we will be using the Single Group Design. Materials and Procedures: Fermentation: Materials 250grams of chayote Grater Knife Drainer Plastic Container Yeast Procedure 1. The 250 grams of chayote will be peeled. 2. The product will be grated using a grater. 3. After that it will be drained using a drainer. 4. Then the yeast will be added. 5. It will be put in a plastic container that will be sealed properly. 6. The researcher will wait for about 3-4 days for fermentation and distillation process will follow.

  5. Distillation: Materials Bunsen Burner Thermometer Retort Thermometer Adapter Beaker Water Inlet Water Outlet Water Condenser Wire Gauze Tripod Procedure • A small Bunsen burner will be used as the heat source. Distillation apparatus will be thoroughly clean. • A 300 ml Fermented chayote will be added to the retort. • Materials for distillation will be prepared or set up. • Bunsen Burner will be turned on. • The distillation process will start and the temperature will be monitored by their boiling point which is 78.3OC for Ethanol and 100OC for water. • Final Testing: An empty motorcycle tank will be used, then the finished product will be poured in it. Then the researchers will wait for about 11 days to see the effect of the finished product on the motorcycle tank.
