  1. Freshwater Biomes By: Courtney Stephens 6th period

  2. What and Where is it found? • The Freshwater biome consist of rivers, ponds, lakes, streams, creeks, and anything that is made up of fresh water.  Because of the purity of the water, the absence of the harsh salt, and the adaptability of the water, a broad spectrum of plant and animal life can be found in these areas. • Freshwater is found all over the world. • Major area’s freshwater can be found in are in Africa. Lake Victoria is an important source of water for natives that live there. • The five great lakes of North America are Lake Superior, Ontario, Michigan, Huron, and Erie.

  3. Why is it important? • The Freshwater Biome accounts for one fifth of the area of the Earth and provides half of the drinking water, one third of the water used for irrigation, and nearly ninety percent of the world's bathwater. • Freshwater biomes consist of inland lakes, streams, brooks, creeks, and rivers--as well as ditches, sloughs, gutters, puddles and canals. • Though bottled water has temporarily decreased the demand for water derived from the freshwater biome, scientists predict that supplies of bottled water may be largely depleted by 2030, when, once again, humans will rely mostly on the freshwater biome to quench their thirst.

  4. What can live there? Plant LifeAnimal Life Algae Cattails Flagellates and Wrigglers Brine-Spike Leeches Swamp frond Diatoms Tamarack Hendrickson Turtle Deer flower River rats Myrtle Bowfin False Ivy

  5. Interesting facts • The freshwater biome contains the second most diverse group of plants and animals. • Although it is not the largest, this biome is the most spread out over the world. • Freshwater Biome where the temperatures are a steady 72 degrees during the summer. • Many fish that live in freshwater biomes share a parasitic relationship with an ectoparasite or an endoparasite. Ectoparasites have external surfaces. For example; skin, fins, and gills. While on the other hand, endoparasites are found in the internal tissues and organs.
