  1. The Water Cycle and Ozone Depletion • By: Brett Granborg, Tamer Fahel, Benny McMullen, Christian Ballestrazze, and Haeli Lomheim

  2. Explanation of Concept The water cycle: Step one: Evaporation; when the sun heats up bodies of water and they turn into steam or vapor and rise up go into the air. Step two: Condensation; the water vapor that rises from evaporation cools and turns back into a liquid which forms clouds. Step three: Precipitation; this occurs when there is too much water in the air and the clouds cannot hold it anymore. This occurs in many different forms like rain, sleet, snow, and hail. Step four: Collection; when the water falls back down it collects in various places. THEN IT STARTS ALL OVER! Haeli Lomheim

  3. Explanation of Concept Ozone depletion: Ozone depletion is when the ozone layer protecting the earth slowly dissipates. This is caused mainly by pollution. Since the 1970’s the ozone layer has steadily depleted by 4% and in the poles it has been much more rapid. Haeli Lomheim

  4. What is a water cycle? • A endless cycle of water where water is turned into vapor, a solid, and liquid. • there are several ways of water being able to go through this cycle. • Evaportranspiration, evaporation, and sublimate. Benny McMullen

  5. Additional content • 1. Atmospheric ozone encircles the globe, providing a protective barrier against harmful solar UV-B radiation for all living things on the earth's surface. Life appeared on the earth’s surface only after this thin protective layer of ozone developed. • 2. Without this protection of the ozone layer in the stratosphere, UltraViolet B radiation causes a variety of health problems for most living things. The health problems are: changes in plant growth and form and development; orientation and motility in plankton the base of the food chain for ocean creatures; and damage to early developmental stages of fish, shrimp, crabs, amphibians. • 3. A theory of ozone depletion by CFCs was published in a magazine, in 1974. Despite these warnings, by the year 2000, these chemicals had reduced the ozone layer by as much as 66% over Antarctica. This created an ozone hole equivalent in area to that of the continental United States. • 4. Ozone depletion is greatest at the poles, but hardly occurs at all near the equator. At temperate latitudes, where most people live, ozone depletion is sufficient to produce a variety of documented human health problems, and crop damage. Tamer Fahel

Effects on Humans (Ozone Depletion) • UV Light, the light which is absobed by the ozone layer, is observed to be a major cause of skin cancer. • The body’s absorption of the UV radiationcauses its DNA to form mutations, which cause errors when the DNA replicates. • The depletion of the ozone layer may also have negative effects on crops such as rice. Rice relies on bacteria in its roots in order to obtain nitrogen. Thse bacteria are sensitive to UV radiation, and increased amounts of it may have harmful effects on the crop. Brett Granborg

  7. Effects on Humans (Water Cycle) • The water cycle is an extremely vital part of human life. Without the water cycle, nothing could survive. It is what provides our crops with water, what causes snow to fall, what feeds lakes and rivers, an what can dry them up; It is what causes trees to grow, and streams to flow. Without the water cycl, hardly anything could exist. If it suddenly stopped,there would be no more rain or snow. Crops would die, and not just humans, but all animals would die of hunger and thirst. The balance of nature would not just be knocked off, it would plummet to its death. Brett Granborg

Water Cycle additional details and facts • There are 40 trillion gallons of water above our heads on an average day • 70% of our earth is water • 326 million cubic miles of water and 3,100 cubic miles are in the atmosphere • The water cycle is a continuous movement of water from the ocean, stream, lakes, or rivers • The water vapor rises into the earths atmosphere where it cools and condescends into liquid droplets • The water is temporarily stored in the lakes, glaciers, underground, or in a living organism Christian Ballesrazze
