1. Methodology • Questionnaire sent to the 20 money museums / central banks of the ESCB network • Questions about their practices concerning • Exchange of pieces of their collections withother institutions (does the museumborrow/lendsuchpieces? on which conditions?) • Exhibitions organized in partnership (withother institutions, museums, the privatesector, etc.) • Whatlessonscanbedrawnfromthese practices for the future and for the network? • 15 answers(including the Banque de France) Banque de France – Paris, 26 mars 2009 Titre

Advantages of such operations • Exchange of pieces • Having access to pieces the museum does not own; complementing the museum’s collection on non fully covered areas • Spreading knowledge ot the museum and its collection • Exhibitions organized in partnership • Organizing one major event, instead of two minor exhibitions in two museums • Having more budget available for an exhibition • Sharing experience and knowledge • Other kinds of partnerships • Building a network with other institutions within a town/a region in order to attract more visitors (common events – eg: annual « Museum Night », « European Heritage Open Days » -, common museum pass, common workshops) Banque de France –

Practices – Loans and exchanges • Only 2 of the 15 answerers do not lend to other institutions • The majority of the loans are short termloans(Exceptions: the Netherlands, Estonia and Austria) • The conditions of loans • No specific conditions (6/15) • Signature of a contract (Belgium) • Guarantee of the appropriatesecurity, insurance and preservation conditions (Portugal, Italy, Hungary) • Transport organized by the partners (Germany) • 8/15 museums have alreadyborrowedpiecesfromother institutions, mainly for temporary exhibitions Banque de France –

Practices – Exhibitions in partnership • 11 of the 15 answerers have organized exhibitions in partnership • With the ECB (Euro banknote design exhibition) • With other money museums and numismatic institutions (Money and your life, by the Netherlands / Money Museum in Utrecht) • With history museums (The art of banknotes, by France/ Carnavalet History Museum, for the 200th anniversary of the Banque de France) • With cultural institutions (Treasures of Portugal: money and art, by Portugal / Cultural Center of Macao, China) • With private collectors (Hungary / Hungarian Philately Scientific Society) Banque de France –
4. Practices – Exhibitions in partnership (continued) • Some museums organize travelling exhibitions • Money and your life, by the Netherlands. The exhibition is meant to travel through the country • Euro banknote design exhibition travels through Europe • Estonia currency from Mark to Euro and Own State, own currency: the story of Estonian currency, by Estonia. The exhibitions are presented in museums / librairies / schools in Estonia, at Latvian History Museum, at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, at the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU (under preparation) Banque de France –
