  1. New Hire Safety OrientationLaboratory Area Personnel Energy Technologies Area (ETA) June 12, 2019

  2. Welcome to ETA! • Safety is our first priority. It must be an integral part of everything we do at ETA. • This presentation will give an brief overview of safety requirements for new personnel working in laboratory areas. • You will also complete the ETA0010 “Lab Safety Orientation” class which will cover lab area requirements in much greater detail.

  3. Work Planning and Control • The “Activity Manager” system is used for authorizing personnel to perform specific types of work. • Work Activities have been established for research conducted in each lab area. • Access Activity Manager to review and accept your Work Activity assignment prior to starting work. • Activity Manager: https://wpc-am.lbl.gov

  4. Safety Training • Safety training requirements are determined through assignment to your Work Activity. • All courses must be completed within 30 days. • Go to the Berkeley Lab Training website to access on-line training courses and classroom training course registration. • Training reminders are sent to your LBNL email account. Regularly check for these messages!

  5. Ergonomics • Make sure your work area is set-up properly and you have needed equipment. • You are required to complete an on-line ergonomic self-assessment by going to: http://www.lbl.gov/ehs/training/webcourses/EHS0059/ • If needed, request a ergonomic evaluation by an ergonomist by going to: https://ehswprod.lbl.gov/Ergo/Start.asp • If you are experiencing discomfort, don’t wait. Let your supervisor know right away!

  6. Lab Area Door Hazard Placard • Posted at the entrance of each technical lab area. • Identifies: • Hazards associated with area • Minimum PPE requirements • Work Activity numbers • Responsible Principal Investigator, Lab Safety Lead, Building Manager, and Division Safety Coordinator • Contact Phone numbers and office locations

  7. Personal Protective Equipment • Minimum Requirements When Entering a Lab Area: • Long pants (no shorts) • Closed-toe shoes (no flip flops or sandals) • Safety glasses with side shields • Wear blue flame resistant lab coat (100% cotton) • Wear chemical gloves compatible with chemicals being handled. • Specific PPE required in some lab areas: laser goggles

  8. Lab Area Hygiene • Food and drinks are not permitted in lab areas • Clean-up all drips and spills immediately • Do not touch door handles and other common equipment with chemical gloves • Do not touch your face or exposed skin while wearing chemical gloves • Properly store and dispose sharps (needles, razor blades) • Keep hood sashes closed when not in use • Do not store lab coats in non-laboratory areas

  9. Housekeeping • Maintain a well organized work area: • Properly store unused chemicals and samples in designated chemical cabinets • Properly store unused tools and equipment • Keep counter tops organized • Prevent trip hazards such as cords • Do not use hood areas for storage • Avoid storage of excess cardboard boxes and packing materials • Do not block exit doors, emergency eyewash and access to electrical panels

  10. Chemicals • All personnel who handle hazardous chemicals must complete EHS0348 Chemical Safety training. • Clearly identify contents of secondary containers such as beakers, flasks, squeeze bottles and sample containers. • Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available by going to: http://www2.lbl.gov/ehs/pub3000/CH45/CH45_MSDS.html

  11. Hazardous Wastes • All personnel who generate hazardous waste must complete EHS0604 Waste Generator training. • Each lab has a Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA). • Identify all haz waste with a red “hazardous waste” label • Wastes must not be accumulated for more than 275 days. • All samples and unwanted chemicals must be properly disposed prior to leaving LBNL. • DO NOT dispose of chemicals down sink drains

  12. Electrical Safety • All electrical equipment used at LBNL must be approved by a Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) such as Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) • Only Qualified Electrical Workers (QEW) can build, modify, or repair electrical equipment >50 VAC. • Clearly tag “out of service- do not use” defective electrical equipment. • Immediately report ANY electrical shock by calling 911. Report to Health Services for a medical evaluation.

  13. Accident Reporting Report all work related accidents to Health Services at Building 26 Health Services Clinic or by calling X6266. For life threatening emergencies, immediately call 911. Let your supervisor know about the accident as soon as possible. All accidents should be reported no matter how minor they may at first seem. Report accidents promptly. Don’t wait until the injury gets worse!

  14. Emergency Procedures • For life threatening emergencies, call X911. • Includes: ambulance and fires. • For non-life threatening emergencies, call X6999 for assistance. • Includes: odors, chemical spills, minor injuries, etc. • Know your building evacuation routes and evacuation assembly area. • Know where emergency equipment is located. This includes fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull stations.

In Event of Emergency Life Threatening Emergencies: 911 • Ambulance • Fire • Serious Injuries • Electrical Shock All Other Emergencies: X6999 (510) 486-6999 (cell) • Minor Injuries • Chemical Spill • Odors All Injuries and Electrical Shocks Must Be Evaluated Immediately at Health Services Located at Bldg. 26 (510-486-6266) Always notify your Supervisor after reporting an emergency

  16. Emergency Procedures • In the event of an earthquake: • Drop, cover, and hold • After shaking stops, evacuate building • Take car keys and small personal items • Follow Building Emergency Team instructions • Do not attempt to re-enter buildings until deemed safe • LabAlert provides lab-wide emergency alerts to via text message on your cell phone.   17. Safety Walk Through • Your supervisor will give you a brief walkthrough of your work area. Make sure you are familiar with the following: • Locations of emergency equipment such as first aid, fire extinguisher, eyewash/shower, and spill clean-up supplies • Locations of phones and fire alarm pull stations. • Building evacuation routes and evacuation assembly area. • If you are not sure about something- ASK
