GED Prep Xcelerator The Company • Based in Melbourne, Fla., Paxen Learning Corporation conducts educational programs and develops educational materials for at-risk learners • Programs emphasize acquisition/development of key academic, life, and work-readiness skills • Paxen programs presently delivered in more than a dozen states, ranging from Florida to Hawaii • Approximately 6,000 learners (ages 16 to 60) participate in Paxen programs each year

GED Prep Xcelerator (con’t) The Program • Started at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, in Spring2006as a means to bolster National Guard recruiting and retention • Today, about 3,000 learners annually attend this national prep program at the Professional Education Center (PEC); that number will rise in 2011 • More than 7,000 graduates • Success rate of 87 percent

The Approach Program emphasizes skill acquisition and development Uses pedagogical approach of Response to Intervention (RTI) Frequent testing, monitoring, and assessment of student capabilities Instruction defined by initial and mid-term student scores Favorable student-to-teacher ratio (approx. 10:1) facilitates individualized and customized instruction GED Prep Xcelerator(con’t)

The Growth Program expanded in 2008 and 2009 to civilian sites in Delaware, Georgia, South Carolina, and Mississippi Results of 74 percent in civilian settings In 2009, program reviewed favorably in academic paper delivered by a pair of university professors to the Hawaii Conference on Education In 2010, curricula/program received honorable mention in “Outstanding Literacy Workplace Program” from the Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE), a national organization GED Prep Xcelerator (con’t)

GED Prep Xcelerator (con’t) The Materials • Subject-specific, accelerated 2-color student books and workbooks—10 in all—that facilitate targeted and efficient instruction • Emphasis on skill acquisition and development through Learn-Practice-Apply methodology • Text decoding, test-taking tips, and ample assessment provide students with repeated opportunities to gauge and assess progress

GED Prep Xcelerator (con’t) Xcelerator Student Books • Individual books for each of the GED areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies • Two-page micro-lessons provide students with essential information and skills in accelerated timeframe • Consumable books feature examples, callouts, and tips—all designed to facilitate students’ acquisition of core reading and thinking skills

GED Prep Xcelerator (con’t) Xcelerator Workbooks • Companion books to each GEDX student edition, also in the areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies • Four-page lessons provide struggling students with twice the support and opportunities for practice and assessment • Consumable books feature multiple examples, callouts, and tips—all designed to help students build skills and remediate weaknesses
