  1. Servant of God James 1:1 March 4, 2018

  2. A Look at the Human Author • Jesus’ half-brother, James Matthew 13:55–56 (ESV) Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And are not His brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all His sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” Cf. Mark 6:3

  3. A Look at the Human Author • James, the doubter John 7:2–5 (ESV) Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. So His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works You are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” For not even His brothers believed in Him.

  4. A Look at the Human Author • James, the believer Acts 1:14 (ESV) All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.

  5. A Look at the Human Author • James, the church leader Galatians 2:9 (ESV) and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

  6. A Look at the Human Author • James, the apostle? Galatians 1:18-19(ESV) Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

  7. A Look at the Human Author • James’ Self Perception “a Servant” – doulos = slave, bondman, man of servile condition. Metaphorically it is one who gives himself up to another’s will. One devoted to another to the disregard of one’s own interests. “of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ”

  8. A Look at the Recipients “To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion” • Jewish Christians • For all Christians

  9. A Look at the Message • “Greetings” – rejoice, be glad

  10. Implications & Applications: • We are going to be greatly blessed as we meditate on and apply the truths from the book of James, God’s servant.

  11. Implications & Applications: • How to go through trials and their purpose • Seeking wisdom • Hearing & doing God’s word • Social Justice God’s way • Controlling the tongue • Understanding and heading off quarrels & fighting • How we should view future plans • How to view riches • Patience in suffering • The power of prayer

  12. Implications & Applications: • Are you a servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ?

  13. 1 Corinthians 3:10–15 (ESV) According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

  14. Matthew 7:21–23 (ESV) Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons in Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.’

  15. Implications & Applications: • Are you a servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ? • It starts with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8–10 (ESV) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
