  4. Purpose of NONFICTION • To explain • To entertain • To inform or give information • To persuade or change someone’s viewpoint

  5. Memoirs What is a memoir? • Historical account written from personal knowledge • Personal sharing of life experience • Involves one part or event from someone’s life

Purpose of MEMOIRS • Main: Tells the story from the author’s perspective • Helps tell a story the way somebody perceived it rather than in a broad view • Lets readers know about the writer’s life and events that happened to him or her • Helps convey the emotions somebody is experiencing • Helps authors relate • Gives self-knowledge

The First Moment of…The SixtiesBy: Joseph Duffy • About a man named Joseph Duffy • When he was eleven years old, he waited for the sixties to start • He believed everything would change • But everything was the same • A few years later: President Kennedy was elected and Duffy started high school • One Friday, Duffy saw his friend talking to another student • He said that Kennedy was shot • Duffy said that nothing was ever the same • That was the real change: that was when the Fifties ended and the Sixties started • It is interesting because it tells about an important event in history according to somebody from that time • It tells how people from that time felt like by the news of Kennedy’s death

How is a MEMOIR different from other nonfiction types? • Differences between memoirs,autobiographies, and biographies • A memoir involves a public portion of the author’s life • Relates to a specific person, historic event, or thing • An autobiography covers the author’s entire life to the present • Expected to include details about his or her public and private life • Biography - someone’s life story written by another person • Difference between memoirs and narrative nonfiction • Memoir – someone writes about his or her own life • Narrative nonfiction – someone writes about the lives of others
