Practicum Meeting Goals • Students will: • Understand the practicum requirements. • Learn about required paperwork that must be completed and submitted by specified due dates. • Demonstrate understanding of material by taking and scoring 100% on the Moodle quiz *Participation in this online meeting does not guarantee seats in the class. Class size is limited. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Classes are offered according to the tri-semester schedule.

  4. Practicum Classes • School Counseling Students Take • COUN 667: Elementary School Counseling Practicum • COUN 659: Secondary School Counseling Practicum • Important: Please read the course schedule notes on MyIUP to see the on-campus and/or off-campus designation for each practicum section.

  5. Overview of Requirements • Indiana Campus – This practicum is completed at an off-campus site location. • Penn Center - This practicum is completed at an off-campus site location.

  6. Indiana Campus – This practicum is completed on-campus or at an off-campus site location. • Penn Center – This practicum is completed at an off-campus site location. Penn Center students may request to use the Indiana Campus training facility as a site. Please contact practicum coordinator for application.

  7. Practicum Classes • Clinical Mental Health Counseling Students Take • COUN 657: Individual Counseling Practicum • COUN 669: Group Counseling Practicum • Important: Please read the course schedule notes on MyIUP to see the on-campus and/or off-campus designation for each practicum section.

Weekly Course Format • Typically class time is 2.5 hours (4:45-7:15 or 7:20-9:50) • For practicum, you have: • Group supervision (no more than 6 students) for 1.5 hours per week • Individual (1 student) or triadic supervision (2 students) at the university 1.0 hour per week • Therefore, group supervision is typically: 4:45-6:15 or 5:45-7:15 • Triadic/Individual supervision is scheduled with your individual instructor. IT MAY BE HELD OUTSIDE THE TYPICAL CLASS TIME

  11. Site Qualifications + Student Qualifications = Practicum Approval Absence of practicum approval will result in you being required to disenroll before the first day of class.

  13. Site Supervisors Site & Site Supervisor Requirements Sites Opportunity to conduct group and/or individual counseling ALL sessions MUST be face to face, in person at the site location. In-home counseling is not permitted. All sessions must be recorded. IUP informed consent form must be completed with each client/student. It may be your place of employment if meets practicum requirements. Master’s degree in counseling or related clinical field. Two years post master’s clinical experience. Department of Education. Will meet with you one hour per week for individual/triadic supervision.

  14. Other Requirements • All direct counseling hours must be face-to-face, in person at the site location. In home counseling is not permitted. • Sites must permit video-recording or audio-recording of counseling sessions. These recordings must be brought to campus for supervision with your faculty supervisor and practicum class.

  15. Other Requirements • All counseling sessions must take place at the site location. Client recruitment advertisements must be in accordance with the ACA Code of Ethics (ACA, 2014) and be approved in advance by the faculty supervisor and site supervisor. Advertisements for off-campus counseling services are not permitted to be displayed at any IUP facility. • Use IUP Required Informed Consent Form (Appendix G) and provide a signed copy to faculty supervisor for each client. Complete any other paperwork required by the site. • Please read the practicum handbook for additional requirements.

  16. Accruing Practicum Hours • In order to facilitate counselor trainee development, it is expected that practicum students will accrue their hours over the entire duration of the semester. The practicum experience should involve staggering client/student sessions throughout the semester. Students in COUN 657-Individual Practicum (Clinical Mental Health), COUN 659- Secondary School Counseling Practicum, & COUN 667- Elementary School Counseling Practicum must be on site seeing clients/students for a minimum of 10 weeks of the semester.

Policy and Procedure for Affiliation Agreements • What is an Affiliation Agreement? • It is a legal document signed by a site and IUP that outlines the responsibilities/liabilities of all parties during an off-site placement • You cannot complete Practicum at a site that does not have an Affiliation Agreement in place • The affiliation agreement policy is available in the Practicum Planning Manual

  19. Policy and Procedure for Affiliation Agreements • Students fill out the Affiliation Agreement Request form, identifying the person at the school or agency that has the authority to sign the Affiliation Agreement. This form should be submitted to the Department of Counseling practicum/field Coordinator • If it is determined that an Affiliation Agreement is needed, the Department of Counseling practicum/field coordinator will submit the information to the Associate Dean, who will send the new Affiliation Agreement to the site • After the site returns the signed agreement, it will be processed at IUP. The Associate Dean will notify the Department of Counseling when the agreement is approved.

  20. Policy and Procedure for Affiliation Agreements Please note: Since IUP is in the process of updating all Affiliation Agreements, the procedure must be followed for ALL potential off-campus practicum sites.

Important Note About Clearances • You must obtain and submit the required clearances and TB test so these documents will be current for the duration of the entire practicum experience and will not expire during the practicum timeframe. • If these items are not updated by the specified due date, you must disenroll from the practicum class(es). • You must also renew your liability insurance in a timely manner so it remains current for the duration of the Practicum course.

Clearances Required • A few Important Notes • SCHOOL COUNSELORS: When getting your Federal Fingerprinting Clearance, you must get a PDE clearance (PA Department of Education) • CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH: When getting your Federal Fingerprinting Clearance, you must get a DHS clearance (Department of Human Services) • Please be advised that with any clearance requirements, a particular site may require additional clearances or have more stringent regulations that these guidelines.

Pre-Practicum Planning Step 1: Participate in Moodle Practicum Meeting Step 2: Review Handbook & Eligibility Requirements • All program prerequisite courses must have been completed. • Take Moodle quiz to demonstrate understanding of the material • Note: Students must pass with 100% in order to move on to Step 3. Step 3: Practicum Registration • You must register for classes on Monday, October 26, 2015 • Read the course schedule notes on MyIUP to see the on-campus and/or off-campus designation for each practicum class.

Pre-Practicum Planning continued… Step 4: Site Qualifications Finding a Practicum Site (Only required if off-campus site practicum) • Review site requirements specified in the Practicum Planning Manual. • Learn about Practicum sites that seem most appropriate in satisfying the Practicum requirements and meeting your personal and professional goals. A database is available to help with choices. • Select your top choice as a Practicum site and contact the site for an informal interview. Be prepared to do the following: • Provide a copy of the Site Supervisor letter and your résumé to agency or school personnel. • State why you want to explore Practicum opportunities at their site. • Determine if the site can meet the Practicum requirements. • Determine if there is a mutual agreement for placement. If so, notify them that they will have to complete an Affiliation Agreement with IUP. • Work with the site supervisor to complete the Practicum Site Information Form, the Practicum Contract and the Checklist for Site Supervisor Qualification forms. • Work with the site supervisor to obtain client/student signatures for the REQUIRED Informed Consent Form.

Important Note About Due Dates • On-Campus Practicum • If Appendix A is not submitted by this due date, you must disenroll from the practicum class(es). • Off-Campus Site Practicum • If Appendix A (at a minimum) is not submitted by this due date, you must disenroll from the practicum class(es). • If you are still finalizing your site and cannot submit Appendices B & C by the due date, you must provide a justification on Appendix A as to why. Your explanation must demonstrate that you are working to secure a site. You are responsible for updating the Practicum Coordinator every three weeks via email regarding the status of Appendix B & C submission. If you do not provide the update, it will be assumed that you will not be completing practicum and that you will disenroll from the practicum class(es). Failure to do so could result in referral to the Student Issues Committee.

  31. Pre-Practicum Planning continued Step 6:Practicum Approval • Students are approved for practicum if the site qualifications and student qualifications are met. After all student and site materials are reviewed and found to meet eligibility requirements, you will receive an e-mail from the Practicum Coordinator stating that you are approved for the practicum class. After receiving this approval e-mail, you may begin the practicum on the first day of the IUP semester. • Absence of practicum approval will result in you being required to disenroll before the first day of class. • Spring Semester begins Tuesday, January 19, 2016

  32. Additional Materials for your Reference • Appendix D – the evaluation your supervisor(s) MUST complete for you at the end of the semester • Appendix E – the evaluation you MUST complete about your site supervisor at the end of the semester (if site-based practicum) • Appendix F – the Practicum Log that you will use to document your hours during practicum • Appendix G – REQUIRED informed consent form (This form must be completed for each client/student before sessions begin)

  33. Registration Information • Check class schedule on MyIUP to see which practicum classes are being offered. • See course notes to determine which practicum sections are offered on-campus or at an off-campus site location. • See course notes to identify which courses are for cohorts; if you are not in the specified cohort, you are not permitted to register for the class.

Registration for Spring 2016 • Monday, October 26, 2015 at9:00 am • Important: Check your status on MyIUP for any holds that may impact your registration • Check with your advisor for course planning and to obtain your updated PIN number • Even though you participated in this meeting, you are not guaranteed a seat in the class! • Seats in classes are on a first come, first serve basis

  35. Penn Center Registration • In order to be guaranteed a cohort seat (if you are part of a cohort), please schedule the first week of registration (October 26). • Starting 9 a.m. on November 9, seats will not be guaranteed, and students from other cohorts or from the Indiana campus will have the ability to register for any available seats • Also, starting at 9 a.m. on November 9, Penn Center students will have the option to register for Indiana campus practicum sections if seats are available

  36. Indiana Campus Registration • Since seats are first come first serve, it is recommended that you register at 9 A.M. on October 26 because sections are anticipated to fill quickly. • Starting at 9 a.m. on November 9, Indiana students may register for a practicum at Penn Center if seats are available and Penn Center students may register for practicum at Indiana Campus if seats are available.

  37. Prerequisite Verification • Due to the curriculum changes, you should check to see if you had the required prerequisite classes. • If there is a problem with prerequisites, please discuss with your advisor and call Kelly Montanti to get a prerequisite override prior to registration.

  38. Practicum Student Rights • As an IUP student, you have many rights related to IUP’s administration of Title IX regulations.  It is essential for you to become familiar with some important resources. Please read the information contained in the Sexual Violence/Sexual Harassment, Students of Concern, and Protection of Minors Reference Manual and the Where to Turn For Help handout.   39. Practicum Student Responsibilities • Complete paperwork. • Request assistance from Faculty Supervisor if needed. • Maintain accurate logs and complete all course requirements. • Act professionally & ethically at all times.

  40. Important Note on Ethics • Appendix A: • I hereby attest that I have read and understand the American Counseling Association Ethical Standards (all students) and American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards (school counseling students) and will practice my counseling in accordance with these Standards. Any breach of these ethics or any unethical behavior on my part will result in my removal from the practicum experience, a failing grade, other disciplinary action, and/or possible removal from the program. Documentation of such behavior will also become part of my permanent record.
