  1. Expository Writing You have 30 minutes to write 1 ½ to 2 pages on this type of essay on the NJASK

  2. READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY • Most situational/experience prompts will have a few parts to the question. Read it carefully. Your essay should be four or five paragraphs. • Restate the question to use as your thesisstatementat the end of your introduction (A.N.T.). • You need to come up with TWO or THREE sub-points (one per paragraph). These will become your topic sentences. Sometimes the parts of the question can each represent one paragraph (like an open-ended question). • Remember to give SUPPORT for your opinions/explain your situation. More support is better than explaining one piece of support. • Always end with a concluding paragraph.

  3. Outline • Introduction Needs: A Necessary information Thesis (with sub-points) • Body Paragraphs Each Need: General Topic Sentence. Explain with examples. • Conclusion Needs: Restate the thesis.

  4. Let’s Practice! How would I plan for this? • Grade 7 – Expository Writing Many students enjoy doing something special for their family and friends. For example, they may take care of their younger siblings or help cook a favorite meal. Write an essay that describes something special that you would like to do for your family or friends. Explain why this would be something special and how your family or friends might react. Be sure to include facts and details to support your explanation.

  5. Let’s Practice! How would I plan for this? • Grade 7 – Expository Writing Many students enjoy doing something fun on a snow day. For example, they may sleep in or build a snowman. Write an essay explaining how you would spend a snow day.

  6. NJ ASK Sample Expository Writing Prompt Writing Task We all know someone who deserves an award for being talented. Identify someone you know who deserves an award such as “The Best Mom,” “The Most Talented,” or “The Best Cook.” Write an essay for your teacher in which you identify a person you feel deserves an award. Explain the award and why you think the person deserves it. Be sure to use details, reasons, and examples in your explanation.
