  2. Characters • Macendo: The protagonist, an ornithologist and researcher. • The Canary: A speaking canary with an odd view of the world • Servants: Work for Macendo, one lets the canary free. • Second Hand Shop Owner • Friends of Macendo: Don’t believe Macendo about the canary.

  3. Conflict There are many smaller conflicts, but the main conflict within this story is Man vs. Man or Macendo’s view verses the canary’s view

  4. Plot

  5. Precipitating Incident • Macendo almost being hit by a carriage • Being forced into the second hand shop • Finding the canary

  6. Rising Action • The canary talking • Macendo having a conversation with him • Macendo buying the canary and researching him

  7. Climax • When the canary cage door is left open by Macendo’s servant • The canary escapes

  8. Falling Action • Macendo walking with his friend • Seeing the canary again

  9. Resolution The canary’s new view of the world as “an infinite blue space, with the sun up above.” and when asked about the secondhand shop he responds “A secondhand shop?...But is there really such a thing as a secondhand shop?”
