Our Promise. . .Our Future… Illinois Learning Standards: Incorporating the common core The Illinois State Board of Education has adopted new math and ELA academic standards for K-12 education. The Goal To better prepare Illinois students for success in college and the workforce in a competitive global economy.

  2. Realizing Illinois Expectations were different in 1997 when Illinois adopted the current standards. To provide clear consistent academic benchmarks for essential learning and skills. Students and parents will clearly understand the knowledge students are expected to attain each year. An opportunity for states to collaborate, innovate and reach economies of scale. Why change the standards?

What is the Design of the newK-12 ELA Standards? • The K-12 ELA standards are benchmarked to College and Career Readiness Standards. • K-8 standards are listed by grade level. • Standards in grades 9-12 are listed in two year bands to allow flexibility in course design. • The standards are separated into four strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

What are College and Career Readiness Skills? • They demonstrate independence. • They build strong content knowledge. • They respond to varying demands of audience, • task, purpose discipline. • They comprehend as well as critique. • They value evidence. • They use technology and digital media • strategically and capably. • They come to understand other perspectives and • cultures.

  6. Overview of K-8Mathematics Standards • The K-5 standards provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. • The 6-8 standards describe robust learning in geometry, algebra, and probability and statistics. • Modeled after the focus of standards from high-performing nations, the standards for grades 7 and 8 include significant algebra and geometry content. • Students who have completed 7th grade and mastered the content and skills will be prepared for algebra in 8th grade or after.

  7. Realizing Illinois What about the other Illinois learning standards? Standards for social/emotional, social science, fine arts, foreign language, physical development and health and science will remain in place.

  8. Realizing Illinois What about Assessment? • No changes will be in place for 2011 Spring ISAT and PSAE assessments. • Illinois is part of a 26- state consortium on assessment (PARCC) focused on developing a richer more authentic evaluation of student learning. transition to new assessment

Realizing Illinois Initial Efforts Underway • A comparison of the new standards to the old standards • Assessment Frameworks • Discussions regarding accountability issues are taking place • Development of an interim plan is a high priority What we know: As the field familiarizes itself with the new common core this year, the ISAT and PSAE for 2011 will be the same as it has been.
