As per the Nation Online...The center manager then again has made an announcement regarding the fact that an 88 years old woman was recently raped by a 22 years old boy in Nsukka. "The boy was later arrested and is currently in police custody," she said. She said an unidentified man raped a 47-year-old woman in April who was returning from a church program. “Just last week we received a report that a 22-year-old girl was raped while another 14-year-old girl was raped on her way to the stream. "The suspects have all been arrested and tried," she said.
Onah has further made an attribution towards the rise in rape cases in the state and to the rise in all the economic hardship as well as social vices in the country. As per her, the incidence of rape has increased this is because there are many residents who are idle while some do so as a part of their lifestyle. And then, she further urged all the youth to engage in more productive as well as positive activities that would distract them from the crime.
"Stop using your power to intimidate the weak, but use these powers to protect them so that society can gain something from you," she said. Onah said the biggest challenge to the rape rape rush is the fact that most families sometimes abandon such cases out of shame in court and protect their names. "Some will even collect as little as 10,000 N to settle out of court over the poverty in the country," she said.
Furthermore, the Onah urged that the rape survivors to always speak or rather than it can be kept silent. You can recall that the Tamar SARC was again established by the Enugy state government so as to save the GBV survivors through the Pathfinder International with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Again, the center has provided counseling, free medical, as well as other support services to the survivors and victims of GBV in the state as well as beyond.
