  1. Requirements for Presentation • Length = 10 minutes/person • Must have at least 5 sources – limit of 3 online sources (not Wikipedia) • Background on the condition; ie: Is the cause of the condition genetic or environmental, etiology of condition, population distribution, pathology, lifestyle impacts, etc. • Are there other forms of treatment other than diet alone; ie: surgery or pharmaceutical intervention? • 3 day diet plan to meet the specific needs of a patient with the condition you are studying • 3 questions that are able to be answered in 1-3 sentences

What is scurvy? • Scurvy Caused by Vitamin C Deficiency – Completely dietary, no genetic • Vitamin C is required for mature collagen formation • Without vitamin C the collagen precursor molecules are unstable and breakdown or disassemble • Pathology of scurvy • Early symptoms: malaise, lethargy, and myalgia can occur • Progresses to loosening of teeth, reopening of scars, epidermal rashes and “corkscrew” hairs • Late stage scurvy results in neuropathy, jaundice and eventually death.

Background • Was not seen until long voyages on ships began to limit diets of fresh fruits and vegetables • Epidemiology – usually restricted to poverty stricken countries with little access to fresh fruits and vegetables • Also affects elderly patients who are unable to provide for themselves • Can also affect people with restricted diets or those with gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcerative colitis or celiac

Background • Does not show male or female preference nor does it show age preferences • Minimum daily intake of vitamin c is 10 mg RDI for vitamin C = 90-100mg • There is no surgical intervention • Collagen is required for wound healing so surgery is not advisable • Therapeutic intervention is high dose vitamin C
