  2. Vision “Sustainability and excellence in engineering skills for the power industry in Australia.”

  3. Focus To ensure a sustainable supply of engineering skills for the power industry in Australia.

  4. Discussion Point Attracting greater numbers and higher quality of students into engineering careers is an industry wide challenge in which AEPI will participate.

  5. Discussion Point AEPI will devote effort into attracting more students into power engineering and will concentrate on ensuring the availability of quality power engineering training courses.

  6. Discussion Point • Delivery of AEPI recognised training will be via: • Short courses in areas of need • Post graduate courses • Undergraduate programs incl industry training • Seminars by experts • Programs for Paraprofessionals • Continuing professional development • Industry experiential programs (incl rotation)

Discussion Point • Identify priorities for critical training needs for • the various parts of the industry: • Modules to suit industry needs (e.g. ENA key areas for Distribution) • Early focus on post qualification courses building from CIGRE panel structure incl power generation • Strengthen undergraduate courses • Different needs of skilled engineers and paraprofessionals

  8. Discussion Point • Recognition of student achievement will be through: • University awards – undergraduate, postgraduate and certificate • AEPI awards (post graduate/CPD only) • Co-badged awards (post graduate/CPD only)

  9. Discussion Point AEPI will principally work through established educational institutions, chosen/supported on the basis of their willingness/capacity to deliver the Institute’s objectives.

Discussion Point AEPI will seek: • Development of distance education processes • Development of Graduate Diploma and Masters programs, emphasising flexible delivery • Para-professional training and pathways towards becoming Professional Engineers • Cooperation between universities through the mechanism of grants and government.

  11. Discussion Point AEPI will relate to universities through: • Designation of relevant courses • Support the hiring and development of staff • Facilitate provision of adjunct faculty • Identify and support research • Support for facilities, especially laboratories • Leadership in developing CRC proposals • Student scholarships, cadetships and prizes - principally industry responsibility. (items 2 – 5 will underpin item 1)

  12. Discussion Point AEPI will develop a monitoring system, a data base and a website, which will enable it to serve as an information source on educational opportunities in power engineering and provide the basis for rigorous periodic evaluation of the institutions and programs it supports, as well as of its own activities and the achievement of its objectives (i.e. KPIs).
