  1. The Fine Art of Sandwich-Making What is your favorite type of sandwich? Step-by-step, how do you make it? What ingredients do you use? In what order? What makes it special?

  2. Introducing… The Excerpt Sandwich! The top piece of bread: make a connection to THEME. This is the “so what?” The toppings (e.g. cheese, lettuce, and tomato): your ANALYSIS of the excerpt. What does it mean? Explain thoroughly! The meat: the EXCERPT itself, quoted verbatim The bottom layer of bread: give some CONTEXT for the excerpt.

  3. How to Make an Excerpt Sandwich! Before you can start making your sandwich, you must PLAN your sandwich. Start by deciding your MEAT. Choose which EXCERPT you want to work with: • rich imagery? • revealing moment? • symbolism?

  4. How to Make an Excerpt Sandwich! 1. Bottom layer of BREAD Give the CONTEXT for the excerpt Locate your reader in the story. • What has just happened? • What background info is necessary to be able to understand the excerpt? 1-2 sentences

  5. How to Make an Excerpt Sandwich! Next, the MEAT! Introduce / Integrate your EXCERPT! Transition smoothly from your thoughts to the excerpt by integrating it into your sentence. • Think of the beginning of your sentence as the mayo or ketchup that “sticks” the meat to the bread. ½ sentence to integrate + a part of the excerpt

  6. Integrating the MEAT, er EXCERPT! Emboldened by his success with the first two pigs, the Big Bad Wolf is surprised to find that after “he huffed, and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, and he puffed and huffed…he could not get the house down”and kill the third little pig (4). The repetition of “huffed”and “puffed”highlights his persistence and shows blah blah and so on an so forth, la la la la la la la la . My sentence! EXAMPLE! The EXCERPT inside quotation marks! Page # at the end of the sentence. It goes inside parentheses, before the period. Analysis follows! These are my astute observations, thoroughly explained.

  7. How to Make an Excerpt Sandwich! Layer on your TOPPINGS! Develop your ANALYSIS! What does this excerpt mean? Explain thoroughly. • Develop your ideas. • Don’t let the excerpt “speak for itself”! • Break it down; pick it apart! • This analysis should be multilayered. 2-4 sentences

  8. How to Make an Excerpt Sandwich! Top it off with the final piece of BREAD! Connect it to the THEME! Answer “So What?” • What is the bigger message? • Go broader—connect this excerpt and story to the universal human condition. 1-2 sentences

  9. The Excerpt Sandwich! 4. THEME 3. ANALYSIS 2. EXCERPT 1. CONTEXT
