  3. The belief that the way to remain powerful is to increase the size of your nation’s military. • European nations created new weapons and increased the size of their armies. Militarism

  4. European nations formed a series of alliances for protection. These alliance obligated them to defend one another. • Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire (Turks), Bulgaria • Allied Powers: Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan Alliances

  5. European nations fiercely competed for possession of colonies, especially in Africa. • Colonies = Power and Wealth (Mercantilism) Imperialism

  6. Increased rivalry among the European powers who each wanted to be the dominating force in Europe. • Nations competing for influence and resources around the world. Nationalism

Gavrilo Principwas a young Serbian national who was angry at Austria-Hungary controlling Serbia and assassinated the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. • Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia, Russia defended them, and soon the rest of Europe was forced to join through alliances.
