  3. The belief that the way to remain powerful is to increase the size of your nation’s military. • European nations created new weapons and increased the size of their armies. Militarism

  4. European nations formed a series of alliances for protection. These alliance obligated them to defend one another. • Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire (Turks), Bulgaria • Allied Powers: Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan Alliances

  5. European nations fiercely competed for possession of colonies, especially in Africa. • Colonies = Power and Wealth (Mercantilism) Imperialism

  6. Increased rivalry among the European powers who each wanted to be the dominating force in Europe. • Nations competing for influence and resources around the world. Nationalism

  7. Gavrilo Principwas a young Serbian national who was angry at Austria-Hungary controlling Serbia and assassinated the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. • Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia, Russia defended them, and soon the rest of Europe was forced to join through alliances.   13. Introduced by Germany, the first gasses were used to create blindness and death by suffocation. Poison Gas
