  1. Macbeth

  2. Themes • Kingship • -Elizabethans believed King was divinely appointed • -The royal “We”- referring to God and I • Respected • Health and prosperity depended on the king. • If Good King: prosperous, success • If Bad King: Failure of realm

  3. Regicide: To kill a king • Natural order is disturbed • God is angry, this anger is manifested in nature • Manifests via a series of omens: Horses eat each other, the mousing owl.

  4. List of Kings Mentioned • 1. Duncan • 2. Macbeth • 3. Edward • 4. Malcolm

  5. Duncan • Good: • Fair “clear in office” • Incorrupt • Honest • Generous with his subjects and praise, visits Macbeth’s house, though only a Thane • Refers to Holy Macduff “good faith” • No deception

  6. Duncan • Bad • Weak • Old • Indecisive • Naïve • Too Trusting • Gullibility • Bad judge of character “There’s no art to find the mind’s construction in the face” • Too generous- This affects Macbeth’s ambition, after all subjects are only doing their duty • Too generous-Cawdor

  7. Scotland is weakened by Duncan’s reign-ignites blatant ambition in Macbeth • Kingship with its potential for good or evil is a main theme in the play Macbeth

  8. Sleep Imagery • Kills Duncan- Says he has murdered sleep • Lying in “restless ecstasy” • Lady Macbeth- You lack the season of all nature sleep! • -says this is indicative of the fact that she is growing weary, she would have taunted him before. • Sleepwalking- guilty conscience • Doctor: more need she the divine than the physician
