3. 1. How does a line locator work? A line sends out a signal
The line locator (receiver) reads this signal through its antenna(s)
The locator translates the signals to be interpreted by the user
4. 2 ways:
Active (strongest signal):
Manually connect a line transmitter onto a line
Choose yourself the signal and frequence
Passive:
Use the signals which are already present: earth signal or electric frequence (50Hz)

9.
When you cannot connect a line transmitters onto a line
What? Use signals present
Line works like a radio antenna
Signal strength depends on the conditions ( proximity of other lines and metal, type of underground...)
Note: not all lines to be found!
10.
With line transmitter (active):
Can find almost all lines
Has a stronger signal thus more precise
You have to connect onto a line
Without line transmitter (Passive)
No need to connect!
But not all lines to be found
A small line (eg small phone line)
A short piece of line
A balanced HV line
A bad conductor
Note about using line location inside a house: limited use:
- lights, PCs, electric cables etc... All disturb the signal
- small room and many metallic objects disturb the signal
