  2. Maintain a valid passport (at least 6 months to expiration). Attend the school listed on your I-20. Enroll full-time each Fall & Spring semesters until program completion. Limit authorized employment to 20hrs. per week when school is in session. Refrain from off-campus employment without authorization. Report change of address within 10 days of change. Depart U.S. no later than 60 days after completion date, or, apply for extension, OPT, or another program of study (at a higher level). Maintaining Status

  3. Employment • Campus: As long as student is maintaining status. • Curricular: Must be linked to program of study. If during the semester, must be for credit or required component of major. Undergrads must wait 1 academic year but grads may qualify immediately if required by program. Consult handout for details. • OPT: Typically upon graduation….workshops will go into more details.

  4. Social Security # • The offer of employment is the only qualifying basis on which an international student may apply for a social security #. • Copy of (on-campus) job offer letter detailing the department, position, name & contact information of your supervisor. Letter from DSO to SS Admin. Passport, I-94 & I-20.

  5. Reinstatement • In the unlikely event that you violate your F-1 status, DHS grants a grace period of up to 5 months during which time you MUST file for reinstatement. • Failure to meet this 5-month grace will result in forfeiture of the right to file reinstatement petition. • Reinstatement checklist is available in OIS, McKeldin 206 or online at our website.

  6. ‘Other’ • Travel signature should be requested at least 3 business days prior to travel. • Transfer-out must be initiated by your new school and request made to OIS at least 4 business days prior to desired release date. • Leave of Absence/Reduced Course Load will only be granted for bona fide medical reasons.
