  1. Advanced Modeling in I-DEAS Integrating Excel into your designs October 3, 2006 CAUG Don Mitchell, P.E.

  2. Outline • Intro • The Master Coordinate System • Excel driven models • Integrating your design with Excel • A small demonstration D. Mitchell, FNAL

  3. 3000 AcceleratorCryomodules D. Mitchell, FNAL

  4. RF Cavity operates at 2 Kelvin 71.8 mm D. Mitchell, FNAL

  5. Two, 20 Km long Linear Accelerators 24,000 RF Cavities 35068mm 1036.2 mm D. Mitchell, FNAL

  6. Generation 4, T4CM D. Mitchell, FNAL

  7. D. Mitchell, FNAL

  8. Collaborations begin with the people • FNAL, Illinois • SLAC, California • JLAB, Virginia • INFN Milan, Pisa • KEK, Japan • DESY, Germany • And more… The Fermilab Design Team* A good design begins with a master C.S. D. Mitchell, FNAL * Missing in photo: Youri Orlov

  9. Master Coordinate System D. Mitchell, FNAL

  10. The Master C.S. becomes the foundation for other parts and assemblies D. Mitchell, FNAL

  11. ACF: Associated Copy Features Parts automatically update when the “master part” is modified. Managing the CAD Model with Excel & I-DEAS D. Mitchell, FNAL

  12. D. Mitchell, FNAL

  13. Automatically adjusts for thermal contraction and component lengths D. Mitchell, FNAL

  14. Part hard-linked to Excel Sheet • Item ID number is imbedded into the spreadsheet! • Copying the part causes an association loss with the spreadsheet. • Keep the spreadsheet in a common location so that your team has access to the file. D. Mitchell, FNAL

  15. Lessons learned • Minimize the number of calculations used in your part’s spreadsheet. (preferably 0) • Put the calculations in a master spreadsheet. Relate cells from the part spreadsheet back to the master. • When you copy a part, simply create a new spreadsheet from within I-DEAS and then cut and paste the old links from the original file. D. Mitchell, FNAL

  16. Demo • Master C.S. & Master Excel file • Create the Excel part file • Link to the Master spreadsheet • Update the part • Copy the part • Create new Excel part file • Update the links to the master Excel D. Mitchell, FNAL
