  1. Technology

  2. Objectives: • Define Technology • List the basic features of technology • Describe technology as a dynamic process • List positive and negative features of technology • Explain the difference between science and technology • Name the major divisions in the evolution of technology • Cite technological developments in each period of technological history • Identify characteristics of the Information Age

  3. Technology Defined • What does it really mean? (students) • How long has it been here? (students)

  4. Technology is humans using objects to change the natural and human-made environment. • Technology is conscious, purposeful actions designed by people to extend human ability or potential to do work.

  5. 4 Basic Features of Technology • Technology is human knowledge • Technology uses tools, materials, and systems • Application of technology results in artifacts (human-made things) or other outputs (pollution and scrap) • Technology is developed by people to modify or control the environment

  6. Technology is Dynamic CHANGE • Dynamic means? • Example-Floppy Disk • Other Examples?

  7. Positive and Negative Aspects of Technology? • Negative????? • Examples • Positive?? • Examples

  8. Technology and Types of Knowledge • Is technology applied science? • NO…technology and science are related but different • Science might be about trees and mountains and critters • Technology is about the human built world

  9. The World Can Be Understood with Science and Technology and Humanities Humanities-the study of how people behave individually(psychology) and in groups(sociology), what they value(religion and ethics) and how they express themselves(art, music and literature) Example-Smarthouse

  10. Evolution of Technology • Primitive conditions-determined by nature • Civilized Conditions-humans exert their will on the natural scene • Evolution of civilization is directly related to the tools of the times

  11. 7 Ages of Technology • Stone Age • Bronze Age • Iron Age • Middle Ages • Renaissance • Industrial Revolution • Information Age

  12. Stone Age • 2 million years ago • People used stone tools and learned to harness fire

  13. Bronze Age • 3000-1200 B.C. • Used copper and tin to make bronze • Bronze was a stronger metal

  14. Iron Age • 1200 B.C. to 1300 A.D. • Iron and steel became the primary materials for tools because they were more plentiful and cheaper • More people could afford tools which created more opportunities for sustained technological advancement.

  15. Middle AgesWar Machines - trebuchet • 588 A.D. to 1500 A.D. • Germanic tribes invaded and conquered the Roman empire • Tribes fighting for territory • Printing Press invented by Johann Gutenberg in 1445 • Magnetic compass • Waterwheel-changed the power of water in mechanized energy • Invention and adoption of paper money increased the amount of good bought and sold

  16. The Renaissance • 1300 A.D. to 1600 A.D • Began in Italy • Great cultural advancement • European voyages traveled to America • Improvement in ships • Tools for farming were brought over • Leonardo DiVinci drew flying machines and moveable bridges • Calculator • Telescope

  17. Industrial Revolution • 1750 A.D. and still • For the last 250 years, technology has drastically changed the world • Began in England • Came to America in the late 1700’s • Steam Engine, Cotton Gin, Power Loom • Led to Continuous Manufacture: • Improved machine life because of interchangeable parts • Division of job into parts • Creation of material handling devices to bring work to workers • Classification of management as a professional group 1900’s-1908,

  18. ????????? • What positive and negative impacts have come about from the industrial revolution?

  19. Information Age • PRESENT • Characteristics: • Wide use of automatic machines and information processing equipment • High demand for trained technicians, technologists and engineers • Blurring of the previously sharp line between production workers and managers • Constant need for job-related training

  20. History of Engineering Every new innovation builds on ideas of previous innovations. Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  21. Engineering is… • The profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to use, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. • The Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET) Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  22. The Speed of History • Rate at which we currently introduce innovations is far more rapid than in the past Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  23. Foundations of Engineering • Early civilizations examined their environments & saw areas where life could be easier • Improved fishing, hunting • Better shelter • Better weapons Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  24. Historic Backgrounds • Civil • Industrial • Mechanical Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  25. History of Civil Engineering • Civil Engineering is to design systems that are functional, efficient, & durable • Ancient Egyptians used surveying for flood predictions • Romans measured & marked land, laid out aqueducts & designed roads Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  26. History of Civil Engineering • Bridges • Dams • Roads • Tunnels • Water Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  27. History of Industrial Engineering • Industrial Engineer’s main role is to combine workers, machines, and materials to increase productivity & reduce waste • Tribal cultures created more efficient tools & made best use of people’s specific skills Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  28. History of Industrial Engineering • Early machines used in Industrial Revolution created by innovators would be in this category • Drills, lathes, crankshaft, water wheels, steam engines, etc. Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  29. History of Mechanical Engineering • Concerned with machines & mechanical devices • Involved in the design, development, production, operation & service of these devices Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press

  30. History of Mechanical Engineering • Chariots • Boats • Trains • Bicycles • Automobiles Engineering Your Future Great Lakes Press
