  1. The Noahic Flood “The World That Then Existed” 2 Peter 3:6

  2. Worldviews in Conflict

  3. Geology Worldviews Is the Grand Canyon evidence of a catastropheor millions of years of erosion? • Catastrophism Prior to the 19th century it was largely assumed by geologists that catastrophes such as the Biblical flood were responsible for the majority of the earth’s fossil bearing rock. • Uniformitarianism Around 1850 the non-catastrophic view of earth’s geology began to develop, which suggested that gradual processes and uniform intensities were instead responsible.

  4. UNIFORMITARIANISM— defined by The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 1970, p. 1399, thus: Geology. When evolutionists gaze upon the immense ocean, the millions of fossils and thick coal seams in the sedimentary rocks, the sea shells on top of the highest mountains, the deep canyons with small rivers, vast dried-up lake beds, and thrust-up mountain blocks,—they declare that it all came about by the same fairly gentle processes and natural forces that are operating today.

  5. What are those processes? • Earthquakes • Volcanoes • Localized floods • Glaciation • Landslides • Tsunamis

  6. Uniformitarianism Charles Lyell (1875) – founder of modern geology. He argued that the same gradual processes and intensities occurring today were largely responsible for geologic formations. Principles of Geology: Being an Attempt to Explain the Former Changes of the Earth’s Surface by References to Causes Now in Action (1830). Charles Lyell

  7. CATASTROPHISM—In contrast, the concept called catastrophism teaches that a terrible crisis occurred at some earlier time. Geologic evidence on all sides is clear that it was a catastrophe of such gigantic proportions that rocks were twisted, mountains were hurled upward, water was pulled out of the earth, and the very atmosphere was dramatically affected. As a consequence, thousands of volcanoes erupted and vast glaciers moved downward from poles which had earlier been warm.

  8. Geology Worldviews Secular geologists view rock formations, fossils, and evidence of vast erosion as proof that the Earth is billions of years old and that life has evolved from simple to complex forms. Creation geologists view this same evidence as proof of a supernaturally-based global flood that is described in the Bible.

  10. Mount St. Helens Before

  11. Mount St. Helens After

  12. Mount St. Helens The eruptions at Mt. St. Helens were an important geological event for creation science. Rapid deposition and erosion occurred providing a model of the type of activity taking place during the great Biblical flood of Noah.

  13. Rapid Strata Formation at Mt. St. Helens Stratified layers up to 400 feet thick formed as a result of landslides, pyroclastic flow, and mudflows, during the Mt. St. Helens eruptions. March 19, 1982 June 12, 1980 May 18, 1980 Toutle River, Mt. St. Helens

  14. Rapid Erosion at Mt. St. Helens On March 19, 1982 a small eruption melted the snow causing a mud flow, which eroded a canyon system up to 140 feet deep. Little Grand CanyonToutle River, Mt. St. Helens

  15. Rapid Strata Formation & Rapid Erosion of Burlingame Canyon Touchet bedsMissoula FloodSlackwater Deposits Near Walla Walla, WA there are up to 40 distinct rhythmite layers exposed in the Burlingame Canyon, that were formed during the Missoula Flood. Burlingame Canyon

  16. Rapid Strata Formation Polystrate Fossils Petrified tree trunks are found that frequently cross several strata proving the layers were deposited at the same time instead of over millions of years. Polystrate Tree inSandstone and Coal

  17. Grand Canyon Strata A lot of water and a little time? A lot of time and a little water?

  18. The Flood of Noah 2 Peter 3: 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.

  19. Strata – formation of sedimentary deposits form a historical geologic timetable. Fossil record is proof positive of evolutionary process. Sedimentary deposits slowly laid down at an average rate of about 1 foot/ 2000 years

  21. The Flood of Noah Psalms 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty, 5 You who laid the foundations of the earth, So that it should not be moved forever, 6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters stood above the mountains.

  22. The Flood of Noah 7 At Your rebuke they fled; At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away. 8 They went up over the mountains; They went down into the valleys, To the place which You founded for them. 9 You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, That they may not return to cover the earth.

  23. The Earth’s Pre-flood State Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (covered the whole earth)

  24. The Earth’s Pre-flood State Gen 1:9-10 9 Then God said," Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

  25. The Flood of Noah 7 At Your rebuke they fled; At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away. 8 They went up over the mountains; They went down into the valleys, To the place which You founded for them. 9 You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, That they may not return to cover the earth.

  26. The Earth’s Pre-flood State Gen 1:6 Then God said," Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

  27. The Earth’s Antediluvian State Ps 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses.
